World Veterinary Day 2020
For the last 20 years, World Veterinary Day has been observed on the last Saturday of April as an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of veterinarians to the animals and society. Animal welfare has a direct impact on the human health system, and thereby the ecology of our earth. So for the well being of the humans, the contributions of veterinarians are admirable. Apart from the health of our favourite pets, vets also play a key role in our diary industry, farming, etc. All major global issues like climate change, medical wastes, and livestock, pollution all have an impact on the animal kingdom. To tackle these issues, and to provide a healthy ecosystem for the animals around us and to avoid endangering of species we need the help of the veterinarians.
From the year 2000, onwards the World Veterinary Association (WVA) started celebrating the day. World Veterinary Association is the world’s largest association for veterinarians. The WVA focuses on providing a “common voice” for all the veterinary professionals across the world. Along with the World Veterinary Association, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) joints hands to spread awareness about animal protection, and the importance of Veterinary professionals in our society. They jointly select the theme for each year to penetrate towards all segments of the society to spread the awareness.
The 2020 World Veterinary Day will be held on April 25, 2020. The theme for the World Veterinary Day 2020 is;
“Environmental protection for improving animal and human health”
While proclaiming the 2020 theme for the celebrations, the World Veterinary Association (WVA) reads as “Veterinarians know that environmental, human and animal health are inextricably linked. Negative changes to our environment will ultimately harm ourselves and the animals in our care,”. The impact on the environment because of the human activities will have a backlash, maybe today or in the nearby future. The bush fire in Australia, the hurricanes, the draught, and the recent pandemic all has a link which can be traced back to human activities, and the animals. Once we destroy the natural ecosystem, and alteration of the earth’s biodiversity the animals, and the environment as a whole will react in a bizarre way, which will cost us a lot. Due to the recent pandemic terror, World Veterinary Association has withheld all the programs and awareness programmes for safety concerns.
