India’s Deep Ocean Mission – UPSC Notes PDF

The Ministry of Earth Sciences has established the Deep Ocean Mission (DOM). DOM is a vision mode project to assist the Blue Economy Initiatives of the Government of India. Initially, the Ministry of Earth Sciences had also rolled out the written Blue Economy Policy. The government has agreed of the Deep Ocean Mission to be executed by the Union ministry of earth sciences at a total budget of ₹4,077 crore for 5 years. The Samudrayaan project is a part of the deep-sea ocean mission under MoES functional from 2021. It is India’s first unique manned ocean mission that focus to send men into the deep sea in a submersible vehicle for deep-sea ocean exploration and mining of rare minerals. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has agreed the proposal of Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) on “Deep Ocean Mission”, with a view to know deep ocean for resources and develop deep sea technologies for sustainable use of ocean resources. A manned submersible will be constructed to carry three people to a depth of 6,000 metres in the ocean with a suite of scientific sensors and tools. An Integrated Mining System will be also developed for mining polymetallic nodules at those depths in the central Indian Ocean.

India’s Deep Ocean Mission – Insights

• The Government of India has announced to establish the Deep Ocean Mission – DOM, with an aim to discover the marine diversity in our country, which is still unexplored.
• The project will be handled  by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).
• Through this mission, the Government focuses to organize the exploration of the underwater world on similar lines as ISRO does for space
• The mission has been laid on similar terms as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) that executes space research, but India’s Deep Ocean Mission will mainly focus on studying and exploring the deepwater bodies in our country for unexplored minerals, stones, living or non-living entities
• Both, man force and robotic machines will be considered for the mission
• Tasks like deep-sea mining, energy exploration, survey of the objects found, and off-shore desalination will be performed rigorously
• The technological advancements done for the Deep Ocean Mission will be funded by the Government scheme “Ocean Services, Technology, Observations, Resources Modelling and Science (O-SMART)”
• Study and research on the climatic changes in the Ocean and other advisory services will be done through this mission
• The concern will also be given on underwater technologies for convenient research
• Two key projects have been included in the Deep Ocean Mission
  • A Desalination Plant
  • Submersible Vehicle, which can explore upto 6000 metres in depth
• The parts of the ocean which are yet to be discovered and are hidden and undiscovered will all be covered through this mission.
• It is a central sector scheme.
