The United Nations’ International Day for Mine Awareness 2024 and Assistance in Mine Action is celebrated on 4th of April every year. On 8 December 2005, the General Assembly proclaimed that 4 April of every year shall be observed as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. It was observed on 4 April 2006 for the very first time.
This year, the UN will boost mine action by highlighting how “Perseverance, Partnership, and Progress” have carried the sector in this challenging year.
The day aims to increase awareness about landmines and progress toward their eradication. “Mine action” refers to a range of efforts to get rid of landmines and explosive remnants of war and to mark and fence off dangerous regions. It also involves assisting victims, educating people how to remain risk-free in a mine-affected environment, counselling for universal participation in international treaties related to landmines, explosive residuals of war and their victims, and demolishing landmines heaped by governments and non-state armed groups.

International Day of Mine Awareness 2024: Background
On 8 December 2005, the UN General Assembly announced that April 4 of each year would be officially proclaimed and determined as International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. It was first observed on 4th of April in the year 2006.
It called for continued efforts by states, with aid from the UN and relevant organizations, to help establish and develop national mine-action capability in countries where mines and explosive war residuals constitute a serious threat to the safety, health, and lives of people, or effects social and economic development at the national and localised levels.
According to the Landmine Monitor Report of 2005, 84 nations were affected by landmines and unexploded ordnance, which together kill or injure between 15,000 and 20,000 adults and children annually. The UN works together with these nations to find and destroy these devices. It also helps to supply various mine-action services in many other countries.

Awareness activities and programs to mark the day take place in many countries all around the world on April 4 every year.
