Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, popularly known as Dadasaheb Phalke, was a producer-director-screenwriter, known as the Father of Indian cinema. His debut film, Raja Harishchandra, was the first Indian movie in 1913. The movie Raja Harishchandra is now known as India’s first full-length feature film. In honour of his contributions towards Indian cinema, annually at the National Film Awards Ceremony the Directorate of Film Festivals, an organisation of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting presents the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. This award is India’s highest award in the field of cinema. The award comprises a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medal, a shawl, and a cash prize of ₹1,000,000. List of Dadasaheb Phalke Award Winners (1969-2021)
Dadasaheb is known as the father of Indian cinema. Raja Harishchandra was the debutant movie of Dadasaheb and was the first Indian movie in 1913, and is now known as India’s first full-length feature film. Dadasaheb Phalke has made 95 feature-length films and 27 short films in his career, spanning 19 years, until 1937. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, is given by the Indian government for the lifetime contribution to cinema, was instituted in1969. Among the winners, the actor Prithviraj Kapoor (1971) and actor Vinod Khanna (2017) are the only posthumous recipients of this prestigious award.
