Cyrus Poncha elected as Vice-President of the Asian Squash Federation

India becomes first Asian nation to launch ‘Plastics Pact’
- India has become the first country in Asia to launch a Plastics Pact, a new platform to promote a circular system for plastics.
- The India Plastic Pact platform was launched on September 03, 2021, by the British High Commissioner to India, Alexander Ellis, at the 16th Sustainability Summit hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
- The Pact targets the businesses to transition towards a circular economy for plastics by 2030.
Dr. PPK Ramacharyulu appointed as Secretary-General of Rajya Sabha
- Rajya Sabha chairman M Venkaiah Naidu has appointed Dr. Parasaram Pattabhi Kesava Ramacharyulu as the new Secretary-General of the Upper House of Parliament, with effect from August 31, 2021.
- Ramacharyulu succeeds Desh Dipak Verma, whose four-year term ended on August 31.
- Prior to this appointment, Ramacharyulu was working as a secretary in the Rajya Sabha Secretariat since 2018.
- He is the first-ever Upper House member to rise from the ranks of the secretariat to the top post of secretary-general in the about 70 years of the Rajya Sabha.

5th India-Kazakhstan Joint Military Exercise “KAZIND-21” Begins
- The India-Kazakhstan joint military exercise “KAZIND-21” commenced on September 01, 2021, at Training Node Aisha Bibi, Kazakhstan.
- KAZIND-21 is the 5th edition of the annual bilateral joint exercise between the two armies and will continue till September 10, 2021.
- 90 soldiers from the Indian Army and 120 troops from Kazakhstan are participating in the exercise to share their expertise and skills in the field of counter-terror operations.
SBI unveils floating ATM on houseboats at Dal Lake in Srinagar
- The State Bank of India (SBI) has opened a floating ATM on Dal Lake in Srinagar, Jammu, and Kashmir.
- The ATM was inaugurated on August 16, 2021, by SBI Chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara, on a Houseboat.
- Prior to this, SBI also installed a floating ATM for the first time on the Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation’s Jhankar yacht (KSINC) in 2004, which operated between the Ernakulam and Vapeyan.
Dorje Angchuk becomes the first Indian to be inducted as a Member of the International Astronomical Union
- Dorje Angchuk, an Engineer in charge at the Indian Astronomical Observatory of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) at Hanle in the Ladakh region, has been admitted as an Honorary Member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
- Angchuk is the first and only Indian to bag the position in the prestigious body. He has been selected for ‘his passionate promotion of astronomy in the Ladakh region, through his excellent astrophotography’.
- He will be joining ten other Honorary Members from around the world, selected by IAU to join a select list of 20 international experts.
Shooting star Avani Lekhara Became the First Indian Woman to win a Paralympic Gold Medal
- Indian paralympic shooter Avani Lekhara won the first gold medal for India at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event on August 30, 2021.
- Lakhara has now become the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in shooting at an Olympic and Paralympic Games.
- The 19-year-old Lekhara scored 249.6 in the final to claim the medal, and with this, she has also equaled the world record and surpassed the Paralympic record.
Javelin Thrower Sumit Antil Wins Gold for India at Tokyo Paralympics
- India’s Sumit Antil has won the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw F64 final event at the Tokyo Paralympics, and in the process set a new world record throw of 68.55m.
- The 23-year-old Sumit hails from Sonepat in Haryana.
- Michal Burian of Australia won the silver medal (66.29m), while Sri Lanka’s Dulan Kodithuwakku won the bronze medal.
Bhavinaben Patel becomes second Indian woman to win a medal in Paralympics
- In table tennis, Indian paddler Bhavinaben Patel has claimed a historical silver medal at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo on August 29, 2021, in the women’s singles summit clash.
- This is the first medal for India at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympic Games.
- Patel is the second Indian woman to win a medal at the Paralympics, after Deepa Malik, who claimed silver in shot put at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
