History of Yorkshire Day 2023

The first ever known celebration of Yorkshire Day dates back to the year 1975. A group called “Yorkshire Ridings Society” which was a part of the Association of British Counties, first celebrated this day. They celebrated this day as Yorkshire Day in order to publicly announce their disagreement on the local government reorganization. The restructuring in the local government was made as a ripple effect of the Local Government Act of 1972.

Even though the history of Yorkshire Day dates back prominently to this event, there are a series of other events that famously lead to the declaration of a public holiday on the 1st of August. This day was already celebrated by the British Army as Minden Day to commemorate the participants of the Battle of Minden.
