- According to Article 65 of the Indian Constitution, the Vice President discharges the functions of the president when a contingency arises due to the resignation, removal, death, impeachment, or the inability of the president to discharge their functions.
- He is also the ex-officio chairperson of Rajya Sabha.
- The election of the Vice President is carried out via electoral college. The members of both the houses elect the Vice President by means of a single transferable vote via a secret ballot.
- Term of Office – 5 years.
- Qualification to be a Vice President:
- Citizen of India who has completed the age of 35 years.
- He should not hold any office of profit under union government, state government, public authority, and local authority.
- Must be eligible for election as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
- He must not be a member of the Rajya Sabha.

- The post of Vice president was taken from the US Constitution.
- Salary of Vice-President – 4 Lakh per month
- Termination of tenure:
- Resignation to be addressed to the President
- Removal- by a resolution of the council of states passed by the majority of its members and agreed to by the Lok Sabha.
