Indira Gandhi Peace prize which is also called the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament, and Development is one of the most important and prestigious awards in the country. This award is accorded annually by the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust and is awarded to individuals or organizations in recognition of creative efforts toward promoting international peace, development, and a new international economic order, ensuring that scientific discoveries are used for the larger good of humanity, and enlarging the scope of freedom. Indira Gandhi Peace Prize was first awarded in the year 1986 and is awarded every year since. The winner of this award with a total of 25 lakhs INR. The winner of every year is selected by a panel of experts consisting of prominent national and international personalities including previous recipients. This year the jury for the selection of the Indira Gandhi Peace Prize was headed by former Chief Justice of India TS Thakur. The major objective and vision upheld by the trust behind awarding the Indira Gandhi Peace Prize are:

- Promoting international peace & development
- Ensuring that scientific discoveries are used for enlarging the scope of freedom and for the larger good of humanity
Indira Gandhi Peace Prize Winner 2021
The Indira Gandhi Peace Prize of the year 2021 was awarded to a Non-Governmental organization named Pratham. Pratham is an NGO that was created to improve education quality in India. Founded in 1995 in Mumbai by Farida Lambay and Madhav Chavan, Pratham is one of the biggest educational NGOs in the country. Pratham was established in 1996 in Mumbai with a vision of high-quality, low-cost, and replicable interventions for addressing the gaps in the education system in the country. The citation announcing the winner of the award this year published by the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust reads “The 2021 Prize is awarded to Pratham for its pioneering work over more than a quarter-century in seeking to ensure that every child has access to quality education, for its innovative use of digital technology to deliver education for its programs to provide skills to young adults, for its regular evaluation of the quality of education, and for its timely response in enabling children to learn during the COVID-19 related school closures”.

The outreach of Pratham has reached about one million children and with government partnership, about five million children are benefitted every year. During the lockdowns due to COVID-19, Pratham took various initiatives to make sure children do not lose out on their regular quality education by using innovative digital technology. The jury considered all the activities that Pratham NGO has taken part in and all the contributions to the development of the rural education section in the country.
