Principal Chief Conservator of Forests manages the selection of TNPSC forest apprentices. The candidate who is selected for the service as a TNPSC forest apprentice is ultimately required to fill in the vacancy of the post of Ranger in the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. But there are a few pit stops before this happens. An appointed applicant will be on probation for a period of 3 years from the date which they join the duty. A candidate appointed as TNPSC forest apprentice will be deputed to the Northern Forest Rangers College, Dehradun or Southern Forest Rangers College, Coimbatore. They have to undergo preliminary training in a forest division during their first year of probation for about 8 weeks to gain knowledge of forestry background before joining college. They receive a stipend of INR 125/- during this period as a travelling allowance. If the candidate completes this training successfully they will be transferred to Rangers’ college, Dehradun or to the Southern Forest Rangers’ College, Coimbatore. The training here lasts no less than two years. If a person who completed the preliminary training could not be sent to the above said two colleges immediately because of the insufficiency of seats in the required program, then they will be treated as Forester from the date they completed the preliminary training. This will continue until the day there is a seat available at said colleges and this person can be deputed there. But if they are found to be unsuitable during the time of their preliminary training by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, they will be deemed disqualified for deputation to the Northern Forest Rangers’ College, Dehradun or the Southern Forest Rangers’ College, Coimbatore for the rest of the training. Their probation will be terminated after that. After successfully completing his training at the Northern Forest Rangers’ College, Dehradun, or the Southern Forest Rangers’ College, Coimbatore, a Forest apprentice shall execute a bond with two sureties for Rs.9000/- and a separate agreement in each form as may be prescribed by the State Government from time to time undertaking to serve the said Government in the Forest Department for a period of five years. After this, the TNPSC Forest Apprentice will be appointed to the post of the ranger. If no vacancies are available for the post of ranger then the candidate will be temporarily assigned as a forester until there is an opening. The TNPSC Forest Apprentice is also supposed to pass all the departmental exams in law, office procedures and accounts during the time of their probation.
