1. A new 50p ‘black hole’ coin in honour of Stephen Hawking’s work unveiled by Royal Mint
- The Royal Mint has honoured Stephen Hawking’s legacy by issuing a new 50 pence piece.
- The coin has drawn its inspiration from Hawking’s work on black holes discussed in his bestselling book- A Brief History of Time.
- The coin has his name engraved along with an illustration of concentric circles that represent a black hole. It also has his equation on the black hole theory.
2. The Arecanut “Sirsi Supari” gets a GI tag
- ‘Sirsi Supari’ cultivated in Yellapura, Siddapura and Sirsi talukas of Uttar Kannada, Karnataka, has received the Geographic Indication (GI) tag which is the first time in the areca nut sector.
- Totgars’ Cooperative Sale Society Ltd., Sirsi, is the registered proprietor of the GI and the Registrar of Geographical Indications, under the Union government, Chennai issued the certificate to the society. Its GI number is 464.
- According to it, the particular arecanut “is medium in size, somewhat flat and rounded in shape, somewhat ash coloured, and has a hard seed.”
3. Mizoram’s first Lokayukta sworn-in
- Global consulting firm Mercer’s Quality of Living Ranking 2019 has named Hyderabad the most liveable city in India for the fifth consecutive year.
- Chennai has been ranked the safest Indian city, 105th in the world.
- Vienna, Austria’s capital, tops the global ranking for the 10th year running, followed by Zurich in Switzerland.
- The ranking influences cities’ abilities to attract business.
- The 21st edition of the annual survey evaluated 231 cities across the globe based on 39 factors including political stability, healthcare, education, crime, recreation and transport.
4. World Sleep Day: 15 March 2019
- World Sleep Day, observed on 15 March, is intended to highlight the importance of sleep.
- Slogan: ‘Healthy Sleep, Healthy Aging’
- It is a call to action on crucial elements related to sleep, which include medication for sleep, education to increase awareness and social aspects.
- The day aims to lessen the burden of sleep problems on society through better prevention and management of sleep disorders.
5. Mohammad Shtayyeh named as Palestinian PM
- Mohammad Shtayyeh has been named as Palestinian Prime Minister by President of Palestinian Mahmoud Abbas.
- Shtayyeh, a former government minister, has been part of a number of Palestinian negotiating teams in the United States-brokered talks with Israel and is a former Minister.
- The announcement comes six weeks after Rami al-Hamdallah tendered his resignation from the post and of his unity government to President Mahmoud Abbas.
6. Kerala’s Marayur jaggery gets GI tag
- Marayur organic jaggery produced at Marayur in the hilly district of Idukki in Kerala has bagged Geographical Indication tag.
- Marayur jaggery is known especially for its organic and traditional production using the sugar cane cultivated in the region.
- It does not contain any chemicals and is high in iron and calcium.
- The sugar cane plantations are spread over several acres at Marayur.
7. Erode Turmeric gets GI tag
- Erode Turmeric has finally received GI tag from the Geographical Indication Registry after a long and cumbersome process which lasted for about 8 years.
- Erode turmeric is a rhizome, both finger and bulb obtained from the Erode local cultivar.
8. Marshall Islands digital currency SOV to be released in 2019
- The Marshall Islands is planning to release a digital currency called “SOV” this year in 2019.
- Neema, an Israel-based company, is partnering with the Marshall Islands government to develop the digital currency.
9. Indian Sundarbans became ‘Wetland of International Importance’
- The Indian Sundarban was accorded with the status of ‘Wetland of International Importance’ in the Ramsar Convention. Indian Sundarban which is also a UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) world heritage site, is home to the Royal Bengal Tiger.
- Indian Sundarban met four out of nine criteria required for the status, which are presence of rare species and threatened ecological communities, biological diversity, significant and representative fish and fish spawning ground and migration path.
- International Importance also called Ramsar Convention, is an international agreement promoting the conservation and wise use of wetlands. It is the only global treaty which focus on a single ecosystem.
10. 116-year-old Japanese woman officially named oldest person
- A 116-year-old Japanese woman, Kane Tanaka has been honoured as the world’s oldest living person by Guinness World Records.
- The global authority on records officially recognised Kane Tanaka in a ceremony.
- Born in January 1903, Tanaka loves playing the board game ‘Othello’ and enjoys studying mathematics.
- The previous oldest living person was another Japanese woman, Chiyo Miyako, who passed away last July, aged 117.
