The Dams are massive barriers built across rivers or the streams to utilize the flow of water for human activities such as irrigation and of hydroelectricity generation. The reservoirs formed due to the construction of dams can be used for several purposes like irrigation, industrial use, navigation etc. Also, it helps to suppress flood. National Register of Large Dam (NRLD) is a compilation of the dams in India, based on the information received from the State Governments. At present, there are 5264 completed large dams and 437 under construction large dams are in our country. Maharashtra has the maximum number of large dams in India (1845) followed by Madhya Pradesh (905) and Gujarat (666).

Before we go into the list of dams in India, let us read more about the different types of dams. On the basis of the structure, dams can be of the following types:

- Indira Sagar Dam has the biggest reservoir in India.
- Tehri Dam in Uttarakhand built over the river Bhagirathi is the highest dam in India with a height of 260.5 m (855 ft).
- Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, Hyderabad over river Krisha is not just India’s but world’s largest masonry dam.
- Bhakra Dam is the second-largest dam of Asia and the largest dam in India across the Sutlej River Himachal Pradesh.
- The highest straight gravity Dam in India – Bhakra Dam
- Hirakud Dam is one of the longest dams in the world with a length of 25.8 km.
- Kallani Dam( (Grand Anicut)) on river Kaveri in Tamil Nadu is the first Dam in India.

- Three Gorges Dam, over the Yangtze River, has been the world’s largest power station in terms of installed capacity (22,500 MW).
- The tallest dam in the world- Nurek dam in Tajikistan.
- Sardar Sarovar Dam on the river Narmada – world’s second-biggest concrete gravity dam after America’s Grand Coulee.
