Paralympics – Overview and History
Paralympics games started from a small gathering of World War II veterans in 1948. Now it has grown to one of the largest games in the world. The Paralympics is conducted for the persons with disabilities like impaired muscle power (e.g., paraplegia and quadriplegia, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida), impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency (e.g., amputation or Dysmelic), leg length difference, short stature, hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis, vision impairment and intellectual impairment. The games are conducted on par with the Olympics games itself. Same treatment to every athlete is given. The International Paralympic committee (IPC) is the governing body of the Paralympic Games whereas the International Olympics Committee (IOC) is the governing body of the Olympic games. Even though the conducting and treatment are the same, the funding gap between the Paralympic games and Olympics games are so different. The Paralympics games have grown to a stage where thousands of sports persons compete over from hundreds of countries.

The 49 Paralympics games have been conducted in Beijing from March 4 -13 this year of 2022, where Para athletes compete in 78 events across six Para sports – 39 for men, 35 for women and four mixed events. Paralympics will be held over five venues in the three competition zones of central Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou. Two of these venues – the National Indoor Stadium (Para Ice Hockey) and the National Aquatic Centre (Wheelchair Curling) – are legacy venues from the 2008 Olympics and Paralympics. Three countries will make their debut at Beijing 2022 – Israel, Azerbaijan and Puerto Rico.
