Gallantry Awards is granted in recognition of “acts of great bravery”. Every year during the occasion of Independence Day and Republic Day, the government announces the Gallantry awards for India. From armed force personnel to civilians these awards have something for all Bravehearts of the country. Twice a year the Ministry of Defence invites recommendations from the Armed Forces and Union Ministry of Home Affairs for gallantry awards. Recommendations are invited normally in August for the awards to be announced on the occasion of Republic Day and in March for the awards to be announced on the occasion of Independence Day. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) receives the recommendations for the civilian citizens are received from all State/ UT Governments, Central Ministries/ Departments, Central Armed Police Forces and Railway Protection Force etc. Based on these recommendations, the Central Honours & Awards Committee (CH&AC) finalizes the Gallantry awards list 2021.

Gallantry Awards in India 2021
The Gallantry Awards awarded by the Indian government is to honour the acts of bravery and sacrifice of the Armed Forces personnel, other lawfully constituted forces and civilians. Every year, the government announces these gallantry awards twice- first on the occasion of Republic Day and then on the occasion of Independence Day. The order of precedence of the Gallantry Awards in India is the Param Vir Chakra, the Ashoka Chakra, the Mahavir Chakra, the Kirti Chakra, the Vir Chakra and the Shaurya Chakra. They can be classified into two categories:
- Gallantry in the Face of Enemy
- Gallantry Other than in the Face of Enemy
Various Gallantry awards belong in these two categories are:

Post-independence, the Param Vir Chakra, the Maha Vir Chakra and the Vir Chakra were instituted by the Indian government on 26th January 1950 which were deemed to affect from August 15, 1947. Thereafter, the remaining gallantry awards i.e. the Ashoka Chakra Class-I, the Ashoka Chakra Class-II and the Ashoka Chakra Class-III were instituted on January 04, 1952, and deemed to affect from August 15 1947. They then renamed the Ashoka Chakra, the Kirti Chakra and the Shaurya Chakra respectively in January 1967.
Gallantry Awards 2021: Descriptions
- Param Vir Chakra
The Param Vir Chakra medal with Plain purple coloured ribbon is Circular in shape, made of bronze, one and three eighth inches in diameter and shall have embossed on the obverse four replicas of “Indra’s Vajra” with the State Emblem embossed in the centre.
- Mahavir Chakra
With half-white and half-orange colour, this medal is Circular in shape and of standard silver, one and three eighth inches in diameter, and shall have embossed on the obverse a five-pointed heraldic star with the points of the star just touching the rim.
- Vir Chakra
The Vir Chakra ribbon is half blue and half orange in colour. The medal is Circular in shape and of standard silver, one and three eighth inches in diameter, and shall have embossed on the obverse a five-pointed heraldic star with the points of the star just touching the rim.
- Ashok Chakra
Have the ribbon with Green colour ribbon divided into two equal segments by an orange vertical line. The gold build medal is Circular in shape, one and three eighth inches in diameter, with rims on both sides.
- Kirti Chakra
Attached to Green colour ribbon divided into three equal parts by two orange vertical lines, the medal is circular in shape and of standard silver, one and three-eighth inches in diameter, with rims on both sides.
- Shaurya Chakra
Attached to Green colour ribbon divided into four equal parts by three vertical lines, the medal is Circular in shape and made of bronze, one and three-eighth inches in diameter, with rims on both sides.
