GATE 2021 Exam Duration & Structure
The GATE 2021 examination will run for 3 hours (extended to 4 hours for candidates eligible for compensatory time). Each paper will feature 65 questions worth 100 marks in total. Once the allotted time is over, the system will automatically end the test.
Candidates must arrive at their allotted seats 40 minutes before the scheduled start. The login window opens 20 minutes prior for reading instructions. Late entry is not permitted beyond 30 minutes after commencement, and candidates must remain in the hall until the official end of the session.
Question Formats in GATE Exam
The question paper will consist of three distinct types:
- MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions): Carry 1 or 2 marks. Wrong answers attract negative marking.
- MSQs (Multiple Select Questions): May have multiple correct answers. No negative marking applies, but no partial credit is given.
- NATs (Numerical Answer Type): Require numerical input via an on-screen keypad. No negative marking.
Cognitive Skills Tested
The exam is structured to evaluate candidates across multiple skill sets:
- Recall: Direct questions based on facts, laws, or formulas.
- Comprehension: Testing clarity of core concepts and basic inferences.
- Application: Practical use of knowledge through calculations and reasoning.
- Analysis & Synthesis: Interpretation of data, diagrams, or scenarios requiring critical evaluation and comparison.
Why This Matters
The balanced design of GATE 2026 ensures it goes beyond rote learning. It measures a candidate’s conceptual understanding, analytical strength, and problem-solving ability—qualities vital for success in higher education and opportunities with PSUs.
