GATE 2023 Question Paper Pattern & Types of Questions
The GATE 2023 question papers were carefully prepared to test candidates on different levels of understanding and application. Each paper had a duration of 3 hours (4 hours for candidates availing compensatory time) and consisted of 65 questions carrying a total of 100 marks. The exam automatically ended once the duration was over.
Candidates were allowed to occupy their seats 40 minutes before the start of the exam and could log in 20 minutes early to read the instructions. However, no entry was allowed after 30 minutes from the scheduled start, and candidates could not leave before the exam ended.
Types of Questions in GATE 2023
- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs): These carried 1 or 2 marks each with only one correct answer. Wrong answers attracted negative marking—1/3 mark deduction for 1-mark questions and 2/3 mark deduction for 2-mark questions.
- Multiple Select Questions (MSQs): These also carried 1 or 2 marks each but allowed one or more correct answers. There was no negative marking, though no partial credit was awarded for partially correct selections.
- Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions: These required candidates to enter a numerical value using a virtual keypad. Answers could be integers or decimals, as specified in the question. There was no negative marking or partial credit for NAT questions.
Categories of Questions in GATE 2023
The questions were framed to assess a range of abilities, including:
- Recall: Testing memory of facts, laws, and formulae.
- Comprehension: Checking understanding of fundamental concepts and the ability to draw simple conclusions.
- Application: Measuring problem-solving and computational skills through logical reasoning.
- Analysis & Synthesis: Evaluating the ability to interpret data, compare information, and identify key assumptions while filtering out irrelevant details.
