GATE 2024 Question Paper Details – Types & Categories of Questions
The GATE 2024 question papers are designed to comprehensively test candidates’ knowledge, problem-solving ability, and conceptual understanding. The exam includes three types of questions – Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. Each question carries either 1 or 2 marks, and the marking rules differ depending on the type.
GATE 2024 MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions)
MCQs carry 1 or 2 marks each. Every MCQ has four answer options, and only one option is correct. Negative marking is applicable –
-
For 1-mark MCQs, ⅓ mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
-
For 2-mark MCQs, ⅔ mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
Example:
Which institute is organizing GATE 2024?
(A) IIT Roorkee (B) IIT Delhi (C) IISc Bangalore (D) IIT Kanpur
Correct Answer: (depends on the official organizing institute for GATE 2024)
GATE 2024 MSQs (Multiple Select Questions)
MSQs also carry 1 or 2 marks but may have one or more than one correct options. Candidates must select all the correct options to score full marks. Importantly, there is no negative marking for MSQs. However, no partial marks are awarded for partially correct answers.
Example:
Which of the following are factors of 96?
(A) 16 (B) 32 (C) 6 (D) 15
Correct Answer: (A), (B), and (C).
GATE 2024 NAT (Numerical Answer Type) Questions
NAT questions require candidates to enter the answer as a numerical value using the virtual keypad. No options are provided. The answer could be an integer or a decimal (e.g., 10, -10, 10.1, -10.001). The question will specify the required decimal precision. No negative marking or partial credit is given for NAT questions.
Example:
If the wire diameter of a compressive helical spring is increased by 2%, the change in spring stiffness (in %) is __________ (rounded off to two decimal places).
