Guru Gobind Singh was the tenth Guru of Sikh who was born on December 22, 1666, in Patna, Bihar. According to the Nanakshahi calendar, his birth anniversary is on January 9 of this year. After the demise of his father named Guru Tegh Bahadur, it was Guru Gobind Singh who became the leader of the Sikhs at the age of nine.
He was a great spiritual master, warrior-poet, and philosopher. It was in 1708 that he was assassinated. December 22 is the day to remember the warrior leader who rose as a famed personality for his contributions to Sikhism. On this day, devotees offer prayers, seek blessings, sing devotional songs, and visit gurudwara to serve the less privileged as a tribute to him.

History of Guru Govind Singh Jayanti 2022
Guru Gobind Singh’s was originally known as Gobind Rai and he was born to the ninth Sikh guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur and Mata Gujri at Patna Sahib which is now in Patna. It was at the age of nine when he came to be known as the tenth Sikh Guru. He ascended after the demise of his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur, to protect the Kashmiri Hindus.

In his childhood, he learned languages that include Sanskrit, Urdu, Hindi, Braj, Gurmukhi, and Persian. His hometown was in the city of Anandpur Sahib, currently in the Rupnagar district of Punjab. Later, he left the place and shifted to Nahan which is a place in the hills of Himachal Pradesh, accepting an invitation from Mat Prakash, the king of Sirmur.
In 1699, Guru Gobind Singh, at a gathering, formed the Khalsa Vani- “Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki fateh”. He also named all his followers with the title Singh, which means lion, and also founded the five principles of Khalsa.

The five principles of Khalsa or the 5 Ks are:
- Kesh which means uncut hair
- Kara which is a steel bracelet
- Kanga which means a wooden comb
- Kaccha which is also spelt Kachh or Kachera and stands for cotton underwear
- Kirpan which is a steel sword

This day plays a significant role in the lives of the Sikhs. It is celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm and is considered one of the most auspicious festivals. Guru Gobind Singh Ji was a great warrior and was known for his inclination towards poetry and the philosophies and writings he stood by.
He refused to answer the Mughal invaders and fought alongside the Khalsa in order to protect his people. It was under his guidance that his followers adhered to a strict code. His philosophies, writings, and poetry inspire people even today. Thus, the Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti celebration is an auspicious festival. He is also known as the father of Khalsa Panth and to date, the festival of Baisakhi is celebrated to mark the birth of this order.

Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti Celebration
To celebrate Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti, Sikhs around the world visit Gurudwaras. Prayer meetings take place in honour of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. People participate in processions that are organized by the Gurudwaras. They hold kirtans and also do Seva, a significant part of the Sikh religion, for the community.
