The first edition of the world championship took place in Tokyo, Japan in 1956. There were no poundage courses at the time and Japanese judoka Shokichi Natsui came the first world champion in chronology, conquering fellow countryman Yoshihiko Yoshimatsu in the final. The alternate world championship was also held in Tokyo two periods latterly, with the Japanese conquering the top two spots in the contest for the alternate time. The championship was held outside Japan for the first time in 1961 and Dutch judoka Anton Geesink conquered the previous world champion, Koji Sone, in Paris, France, to reach the first-Japanese world champ.
The 1965 World Judo championships were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and weight classes were implemented for the first stretch with the addition of the −68 kg, −80 kg, and 80 kg orders.
