Phrasal Verb

A phrasal verb is the combination of two or three words. Those words can be adverbs, propositions, or verbs. The meaning of the phrasal verb depends upon the following adverb, verb, or preposition. The connected two or more words can act as a new word altogether. The meaning of the phrasal verb is completely different from the main or the original verb. For instance, the phrasal verb “look down” has an altogether different meaning when compared to the individual words, “look” and “down”.

Phrasal verbs: Types

Phrasal verbs can be classified into two types. They are as follows;

  • Transitive Phrasal Verbs
  • Intransitive Phrasal Verbs

Similar to transitive verbs, transitive phrasal verbs use a direct object

Whereas intransitive phrasal verbs are devoid of objects.

Examples

  • The thief broke down during the interrogation. (Intransitive)
  • The managers called off the strike. (transitive)

In a phrasal verb, the particle can come before or after the direct object.

  • They turned on the light
  • They turned the light on.
