National Ordnance Factories Day 2024 – History
The history and evolution of ordnance factories in India is connected to the British rule era. The East India Company of England, to modify and improve their economic interest and political hold, considered manufacturing military hardware as an essential element. The British authorities established a Board of Ordnance in Fort William in 1775, Kolkata, which marks the official beginning and evolution of the Army Ordnance in India. They then set up a gun powder factory in 1787 at Ishapore, which started the manufacturing in 1791. The British established a Gun Carriage Agency at Cossipore, Kolkata In 1801 and production begun on 18th March, 1802. This mark the first industrial establishment of Ordnance Factories in India and they continue to operate till date.

OFB is recognized as the “Fourth Arm of Defence” or the “Force Behind the Armed Forces” of India.
OFB is managed by the Department of Defence Production of the Ministry of Defence.
The Indian Ordnance Factories provide products to all three Indian Armed Forces.The Arms and Ammunition, Weapon Spares, Leather and Clothing items, Chemicals & Explosives, Parachutes are being imported to more than 30 countries worldwide.

In existing times, the requirement of every country is to have robust arms and ammunition supply for its armed forces. As of today, the Ordnance Factories organisation comprises 41 factories organised into five operational parts of the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB). They also found a defence production conglomerate with a comprehensive and wide range of products in the area of land, sea and air systems. OFB is considered the fourth Arm of Defence and is one of the four arms of defence in the country, along with the Army, the Air Force and the Navy.
