On November 14, the Indian Sports Ministry revealed the list of National Sports Awards 2022 recipients. Achanta Sharath Kamal, a great table tennis player from India, will receive the Khel Ratna Award this time. On Wednesday, November 30, the country’s up-and-coming badminton player Lakshya Sen will also get the Arjuna Award. The sporting honors will be given out at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi by President Droupadi Murmu.
The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award, India’s highest athletic honor, has been given to Sharath Kamal. Earlier this year, he competed in the Commonwealth Games 2022 and took home three gold and one silver medal. This veteran player has won gold in the men’s team, mixed team, and men’s singles divisions. “Honestly, I was expecting it. But what has been a pleasant surprise is the fact that I will be the only one receiving the award this time. I feel completely humbled for being chosen for this honor,” said Sharath Kamal.
The Arjuna Award, granted to athletes for sustained success over a four-year period, was also handed to 25 other athletes besides Sharath.
Among the winners of the Arjuna Award were boxers Nikhat Zareen, who won the boxing world championship in May, Lakshya Sen, who won the men’s singles gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and Amit Panghal, who won the boxing silver medal in 2019.

Eldhose Paul, a triple jumper, and Avinash Sable, a steeplechaser, both CWG 2022 record-breakers, also received the Arjuna Award. Avinash Sable won a silver in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, ending Kenya’s dominance on the podium in the event, while Eldhose became the first Indian to win a CWG gold in the men’s triple jump.
Every year, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports receives recommendations for the National Award nominees from a selection committee made up of notable sports figures, sports journalists, and sports administrators.
