Renowned Goan Artist Laxman Pai Expired
The much-decorated artist and philanthropist Laxman Pai passed away at his residence in Goa on Sunday. Pai was 95 when he passed away at his home in Dona Paula in Margao, South Goa. Pai’s loss will create a great vacuum in the modern Indian painting scenario. The former principal of the Goa State College of Art had several laurels under his name including Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, Nehru Award, Vidyadiraj Puraskar and Lalit Kala Akademi Award. Pai was the first painter in Goa for sure but in India too to use acrylic as a medium. His works demonstrate the stylistics of Indian folk art. Apart from his visual references, his experiments with partial abstraction were also enabled through his forays into Indian classical music.
Laxman Pai was an active member of the Goa liberation movement and had been imprisoned for his participation in the Satyagraha during the Indian freedom struggle. Born in Margao, Pai studied and later taught at the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy School of Art, Bombay, and for a period of ten years was the principal of Goa College of Art.
