She was a 12-year-old cancer patient who was detected with Askin’s tumour, a rare type of blood cancer. Her doctors said that she would not live for more than a week after therapy. But thanks to her courage and power, she was able to live for almost 6 months. Melinda Rose never lost up hope of beating cancer at that time. Melinda spent time with cancer patients during this time, writing brief notes, poems, and e-mails to brighten their days.

The day is observed in memory of Melinda Rose, a 12-year-old from Canada who was diagnosed with a rare kind of blood cancer – Askin’s Tumour. The doctors had predicted that Rose had just a few weeks, but, she didn’t give up on hope and survived for six months. The girl spread hope and positivity among cancer patients by writing verses, letters and emails and sending them courage to fight the disease. This day is celebrated by giving a rose to cancer patients as the flower is a symbol of care and tenderness. Melinda’s kindness and courage during such a difficult time in her life had worked as an inspiration for many and thus, was taken as a thought to celebrate such a day.
