On this day, we celebrate the principles, values, history and impact of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. We also take this opportunity to show gratitude to the volunteers, members and staff to prevent and alleviate human suffering all over the world. History of World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day
Red Cross Day is the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, the founder of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the first person to receive the Nobel Peace prize. A contribution to peace initiative known as Red Cross Truce was started after World War I. It was a three day truce in former Czechoslovakia which took place during Easter time. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) was founded in 1919 in Paris in the aftermath of World War I with five founding members namely Britain, France, Italy, Japan and the United States. Currently there are 192 recognized National Societies, a Secretariat in Geneva and delegations strategically located to support activities around the world. The first Red Cross and Red Crescent Day was held in 1948 on the 8th of May. The worldwide structure of the Red Cross and Red Crescent now consists of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies. All Red Cross and Red Crescent activities have one central purpose: to help those who suffer, without discrimination, whether during conflict, in response to natural or man-made disasters, or due to conditions of chronic poverty.

The 7 Fundamental Principles of Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
1: Who was the first woman President of India?
- Humanity: To prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. To protect the life, health and to ensure respect for every human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, and cooperation among people.
- Impartiality: No discrimination should be made on the basis of nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. To help the people only on the basis of their needs and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress.
- Neutrality: To keep everyone neutral in providing help and the movement should not be affected by political, racial, religious or ideological controversies.
- Independence: This movement is independent. The National Societies, while auxiliaries in the humanitarian services of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance with the principles of the movement.
- Voluntary Service: It is voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.
- Unity: There will be just one Red Cross and Red Crescent in one country. This organization must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory and should be open to all.
- Universality: All societies have equal status and share equal liabilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide.
