History and Significance of World Refugee Day
United Nations General Assembly took a decision on 4 December 2000 based on the resolution 55/76 that from the year 2000, June 20 will be celebrated as world refugee day every year. It was also noted that 2001 marked the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the status of refugees. This day is observed to honor the courage, strength, and determination of people who are forced to flee their homeland under the threat of persecution, conflict, and violence. It is commemorative to raise awareness and to ensure support to the refugees.
