HPSC HCS Scheme of Examination
HCS (Ex. Br.) & Other Allied Services Examination will consist of 3 successive stages. Check the plan for the conduct of the prelims, mains.
Preliminary Exam (for screening only)
- Both the Question papers shall be of objective type (multiple choices) questions
- Question papers shall be set bilingual i.e., in English and Hindi.
- For each wrong answer, 0.25 marks will be deducted.
- Civil Services Aptitude Test shall be a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%.
- And, the result of the preliminary examination shall be based on the marks obtained in Paper – I only.

Mains Exam
The candidates shall write their answers in Hindi or English except in language or literature papers.
For attending the Interview, candidates should obtain at least 45% marks in the aggregate of all written papers and a score of a minimum of 33% marks each in Hindi (including Hindi Essay) in Devanagari script and English (including English essay) papers (compulsory papers).

The aim of the paper is to test the candidate‘s ability to read and understand serious discursive prose, and to express his ideas: clearly and correctly in English.

Part-I
- History of Modern India and Indian Culture
The History of Modern India will cover the history of the country from about the middle of the nineteenth century and would also include questions on important personalities who shaped the freedom movement and social reforms. The part relating to Indian Culture‘will cover all aspects of Indian culture from ancient to modern times.
- Geography of India- In this part, questions will on the physical, economic and social geography of India.
- Indian Polity– This part will include questions on the Constitution of India, Political system, and related matters.
- Current National issues and topics of social relevance.
This part is intended to test the candidate‘s awareness of current national issues and topics of social relevance in present-day India, such as the following: Demography and Human Resources and related issues. - Developments in the field of science and technology, communications, and space. In this part, questions will test the candidate‘s awareness of the developments in the field of science and technology, communications and space, and also basic ideas computers.
- Statistical analysis, graphs, and diagrams
This part will include exercises to test the candidate‘s ability to draw common-sense conclusions from information presented in a statistical, graphical, or diagrammatical form and to point out deficiencies, limitations, or inconsistencies therein.
