The exam is having phases:
- Preliminary- It is having Objective Type Questions with TWO papers, 200 marks each, and 2 hours for each.

Qualifying Language Papers (In the level of Class-X)
The Commission will decide the minimum qualifying marks for these papers. The pass in these papers is mandatory, however, the marks will not be counted.

- Interview- After qualifying in the written Mains examination, the candidates will be called for the Interview. The interview will be out of 275 marks.

General Studies – Paper – I (200 marks) – 100 Questions
- Current events of national and international importance.
- History of India and Indian National Movement.
- Indian and World Geography-Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
- Indian Polity and Governance-Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc,
- Economic and Social Development-Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
- General issues on Environment ecology, Bio-Diversity, and Climate Change- that do not require subject specialization.
- General Science.

Note: 30-35% of questions in General Studies Paper I will be related to Assam.
