The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is the R&D wing of the Indian Defence Ministry. On March 8, DRDO disclosed their latest achievement in successfully developing the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) System by proving the land-based prototype. The AIP system which was under development is now fit to be installed in the targeted vessels.
What is an AIP system?
AIP stands for Air Independent Propulsion. This system developed by DRDO is based on Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell. This system lowers the noise levels made by the submarine while travelling, thereby making its detection harder. This enables the submarine to stay underwater for longer hours than before.
An AIP system will enhance the lethality of a diesel submarine by ensuring higher endurance and lowering the chances of detection. This means that the submarine can stay underwater for longer hours than before. The fuel cell-based AIP has several advantages over other technologies. The onboard generation of hydrogen in the fuel cell makes it different from other AIP systems.
The system is being developed by the Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL) of the DRDO with the support of industry partners L&T and Thermax and in line with the Atma Nirbhar Bharath Campaign. US, France, China, UK, and Russia are the only countries, other than India, which this technology.
The Indian Navy and DRDO was congratulated by the Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for the achievement.
Dr G Satheesh Reddy, Secretary DDR&D and Chairman DRDO, called upon the DRDO fraternity to come up with more such advanced technological achievements by putting in extraordinary efforts.
