Research and Analysis Wing or RAW is the foreign Intelligence service of India with it’s headquarters located in New Delhi. RAW reports directly to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The principle aim of RAW is to assemble information about another country’s activities, defend citizens against covert operations from other countries as well as internal sources and prevent potential political scrutiny.
Initially, RAW used to hire trained offers from the external wing of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and from Indian Armed Forces, Police and Indian Revenue Service. It has now started its own service cadre (Research and Analysis Service) to recruit talents writing Group A Civil Service exam under the Central Staffing Scheme. Class 1 officers of civil services undergoing the foundation course at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration are interviewed by Raw at the end of the course. Candidates are then inducted into RAW on the basis of Psychological tests and interviews. Apart from this, jobs at RAW are also offered to those who clear the UPSC examination. Lateral deputation is done from the Officer corps of Armed Forces or Group A Civil Service Officers.

RAW Recruitment 2022 Requirements
To become a RAW agent, there are certain eligibility criteria regarding age, educational qualification and work experience.
RAW Educational Qualification
To become a RAW agent, aspirants should have a Bachelors degree from a reputed university or organization. Along with this, learning foreign language is necessary to become a RAW agent.
RAW Age Limit
To work for RAW, applicants should be under 56 years of age. Twenty years of service is also required to become a RAW agent.
Apart from the above, there are certain general criteria.
- RAW will only consider Indian nationals to be part of the agency.
- Applicants should not have any criminal history.
- They should not be drug addicts.
- They should be ready to travel to any part of the country in short notice.
- Their job as a RAW agent should be kept a secret from family and friends.
RAW Selection Process
Getting recruited to this prestigious institute is no mean task. The selection process includes a written examination followed by an interview. Those aspiring to become a RAW agent have to appear for CGPE (Combined Graduate Preliminary Exam) conducted by SSC (Staff Selection Commission). candidates have to take the ‘Group A’ Civil Services exam under the Central Staffing Scheme. They also have to score well in all the stages of the Civil Service examination. Only those candidates who pass these exams will be allowed to write the RAW test.

Even though there are different posts in RAW agency, RAW officers do not have a fixed job description. They should be ready to do any task assigned to them.
RAW Officer Job Profile
The job profile of a RAW agent includes monitoring the political and military developments in countries surrounding India. Some of the objectives are:
- To keep a watchful eye on the activities of the enemy and to inform the agency about the same.
- To secretly gather foreign intelligence.
- To prevent threats to India’s National Security from within the country as well as from external forces.
- To conduct counter terrorism operations
- To ensure security of world leaders visiting India.
- To advice policy makers in the country.
- To secure nuclear program of the country.

RAW Salary
Even though there is no official information about the salary of a RAW agent, it is estimated to be around Rs. 80000 to Rs. 130000 per month. Some of the other perks of being a RAW agent are:
- RAW agents or officials get two months of extra pay per financial year.
- If a RAW agent is asked to relocate to any foreign country and he/ she has children, they can be enrolled in an international. The fee will be paid by the government.
- Raw Agents get hardship allowance for the postings which have been categorized as hardship postings by the department.
- RAW employees posted overseas get particular Dearness Allowance as well as foreign service allowance.
- They also get a special security allowance, which could be above their gross income; basic pay, and dearness allowance.
RAW Agent Training
The post of RAW agents and officers come with great responsibilities. Hence all RAW agents have to undergo rigorous training. The training process of RAW agents is classified into two: Basic Training and Advanced Training. Let us have a detailed look into each of this.
Basic Training
The basic training of a RAW agent is an introduction held in Delhi and lasts for ten days . During this period they are introduced to the world of surveillance and espionage. The agents are trained in different languages, information security, common techniques, scientific knowledge, etc. There are made to solve case studies of various intelligence agencies to provide mental training.
Advanced Training
Once the agents are done with the basic training, they are sent to the Indian military academy, which is in Dehradun, for extensive training. This training last for around one to two years. During this training, the agents are taught the survival methods to be acted upon during a mission. They are taught how to avoid capture, infiltration and exfiltration, how to handle and what to do during an interrogation, how to use espionage devices and other high tech gadgets. They are also trained how to face cross examination of the enemy and how to hide secrets if caught.
After these rigorous training, the agents are officially ready to start their work.
