Nobody imagined it was a 48,500-year-old virus hidden beneath a frozen lake in Russia, even though many people thought it might be a movie or a funny video! Following the resurrection of a 48,500-year-old zombie virus trapped under a frozen lake in Russia, French researchers have issued a warning about the beginning of a new outbreak. Scientists from Russia, Germany, and France studied ancient samples collected from Permafrost in Siberia, Russia. They found roughly 12 viruses at the bottom of a lake that frozened for thousands of years due to climate change. The scientists said that the virus has been frozen for thousands of years but is still capable of infecting humans. It might be mostly infecting amoeba microbes and have a low risk of infecting humans. Although primitive viruses like these become visible as glaciers melt, it is impossible to predict how long they will stay contagious outside their natural environment.
Along with zombie virus, scientists have also discovered Siberian wolf intestine and mammoth wool beneath the permafrost. Find below each in detail
What is Zombie Virus?
Zombie virus is the term used for those viruses which have been dormant for thousands of years. This has broken the previous record held by a 30,000-year-old virus discovered by the same team in Siberia in 2013. The virus was found buried under glaciers.
What could be the cause of it?
According to the study, one-quarter of the Northern hemisphere is underlain by permanently frozen ground, referred to as permafrost.
Are zombie viruses dangerous to people?
Scientists caution that zombie viruses may cause diseases that could harm people. They said that even though it has been frozen for thousands of years, it is still capable of attacking humans. It might be mostly infecting amoeba and microbes.
