What is Cancer?
Cells are the basic units of the human body. Cells grow and divide to make new cells as the body needs them. When the cells die when they get old or damaged, new cells take their place and this process should continue like this for sustaining a healthy life. When genetic changes interfere with this periodic process, Cancer begins. Cells start to grow uncontrollably and these cells may form a mass called a tumour. A cancerous tumour is malignant, i.e, it can grow and spread to other parts of the body. A benign tumour means the tumour can grow but will not spread.

Together, these six types account for 49% of all new cancer cases. Of the 570,000 new cancer cases in men, oral cancer (92,000), lung cancer (49,000), stomach cancer (39,000), colorectal cancer (37,000), and oesophageal cancer (34,000) account for 45% of cases. The report added that of the 587,000 new cancer cases in women, breast cancer (162,500), cervical cancer (97,000), ovarian cancer (36,000), oral cancer (28,000), and colorectal cancer (20,000) account for 60% of cases.
Aizawl and Papumpare districts had the highest age-adjusted incidence rates among males and females, respectively. The projected number of patients with cancer in India were 1,392,179 for the year 2020 and the common 5 leading sites are breast, lung, mouth, cervix uteri, and tongue. Trends in cancer incidence rate showed an increase in all sites of cancer in both sexes and were high in Kamrup urban (annual per cent change, 3.8%; P < .05). India accounts for about one-fifth of the global burden of cervical cancer, despite decreasing incidence rates in several regions of the country. Thus, the elimination of cervical cancer in India will have a major impact on the global level.
