World Sparrow Day 2023: Importance
The Nature Forever Society (NFS) in India started an international initiative to celebrate World Sparrow Day. It is an international initiative by the Nature Forever Society of India in collaboration with the Eco-Sys Action Foundation (France) and numerous other national and international organizations across the world. The Nature Forever Society was started by Mohammed Dilawar, an Indian conservationist who started his work helping the house sparrow in Nashik, and who was named one of the “Heroes of the Environment” for 2008 by Time.
Later, during the discussions, the idea came up to earmark a day for the House Sparrow to spread the message regarding the conservation of these birds. And a special day to comprehend the beauty of the common biodiversity which is taken so much for granted was decided to observe. Thus, the first World Sparrow Day was celebrated in 2010 in different parts of the world.
Even though it is found widespread and abundant, its numbers have declined in some areas. So, a day was designated as World Sparrow Day to raise awareness of the House Sparrow and other common birds to urban environments, and of threats faced by their populations.
The house sparrow is a very social bird. It is gregarious during all seasons when feeding, often forming flocks with other species of birds.
The house sparrow originated in the Middle East and spread, along with agriculture, to most of Eurasia and parts of North Africa. Sparrows and their chirps are strongly associated with human habitations and can live in urban or rural settings. Though found in widely varied habitats and climates, it typically avoids extensive woodlands, grasslands, and deserts away from human development. Because of its numbers, ubiquity, and association with human settlements, the sparrow is culturally prominent.
