The story of Indian Independence Movement was no child’s play. It was a historic movement involving millions of people all of who wanted India to be free from the clutches of the British. The fight for freedom took years and lives of many people. When we look back into the Indian Freedom Movement, we recall some of the familiar names at the top of the list.This includes, Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Jawaharlal Nehru, Bhagat Singh, etc. However, all of the leaders did not necessarily follow the same principle in their struggle for freedom. There were some freedom fighters who believed in ahimsa (non violence) and some others who believed in revolutionary methods. Freedom Fighters & India’s Freedom Movement
Ater being a British Colony for centuries, India no longer wanted to remain one. Struggles for the Indian Independence were seen arising from every nook and corner of the country. During such a phase in the Indian history, massive impact was made by the Freedom Fighters who tirelessly worked for Indian Independence. Each of the freedom fighters motivated and influenced millions of fellow Indians to raise their voices for freedom of the nation. Moreover, they educated the masses about their rights and duties towards their motherland, ultimately leading to India’s Independence.

By now, we already know that we are what we are because of the sacrifices made by the freedom Fighters during the struggle for Indian Independence. Meanwhile, it is to be noted that not all the freedom fighters followed the same method during the freedom movement. Some of the freedom fighters believed in revolutionary methods in order to set the country free from the British.
When we go on to define the word ‘revolutionary’, it refers to someone who takes part in a resistance movement against an oppressive force or government. A major part of Indian Freedom Movement consisted of revolutionary methods followed by individuals and organizations. Rash Behari Bose familiarized this method of Freedom Movement to others and he is called ‘ the father of Indian revolutionary movement’ . All the freedom fighters who resorted to revolutionary methods to allow freedom for the country are called Revolutionary Freedom Fighters.

Details of Revolutionary Freedom Fighters of India
In this section of the article, let us gain an in-depth knowledge about some of the well known revolutionary freedom fighters of India.
Rash Behari Bose
- Rash Behari Bose was born on 25 May 1886 in West Bengal.
- He led numerous revolutionary fights against the British rule.
- He was the lead organizer of Ghadar Mutiny.
- “Azad Hind Fauj” also called the Indian National Army was set up by Rash behari Bose. He later handed over the complete leadership to Subash Chandra bose.
- Behari Bose was the chief founder of Indian Independence League.
- The Japanese Government honoured him with the order of the land of the rising sun.
- He died of Tuberculosis on 21st January in the year 1945.
Khudiram Bose
- Kudiram Bose was born on 3rd December 1889 in Bengal.
- Famously known for the Muzaffarpur Conspiracy Case.
- He is known to be the second youngest Indian Revolutionary Freedom Fighter, who was hanged at the age of 18.
- Khudiram was an active member of a revolutionary party in Bengal called ‘JUGANTAR’.
- He actively fought against the British during the partition of Bengal.
- The British arrested him for a bomb attack case and sentenced him to be executed.
- He was hanged to death on August 11, 1908, aged 18 years, 8 months, and 11 days,10 hours old .
Chandra Shekhar Azad
- Chandra Shekhar Tiwari was born on 23rd July 1906 at Alirajpur.
- He was an active socialist revolutionary fighter.
- Chandra Shekar Tiwari later adopted the surname “Azad” which means “free”
- He reorganized Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) as Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA)
- He escaped the arrest involved in the Kakori Train Dacoity case.
- As brave a person he was, he chose himself to die rather than surrender to the British on 27 Feb 1931, aged 24, during an encounter in Alfred Park, Allahabad.
Bhagat Singh
- Bhagat Singh was born in September 1907 at Punjab.
- To avenge the killing of Lala Lajpat Rai, Bhagat Singh along with Rajguru shot dead Colonel Sanders mistakenly for James Scott.
- He was involved in the restructuring of Hindustan Republican Association to Hindustan Socialist Republican Association.
- Bhagat Singh along with Batukeshwar Dutt is known for throwing bombs at the Legislative Assembly Chamber in Delhi in the year 1929.
- He was hanged on 23rd March 1931, at the youn age of 23 years , along with Rajguru and Sukhdev at Lahore Jail.
Ram Prasad Bismil
- Ram rasad Bismil was born at Shahjahanpur on 11th June 1897.
- He co-founded the Hindustan Republican Association together with Sachindranath Sanyal.
- He is known for the Mainpuri Conspiracy of 1918 as well as the Kakori Train Conspiracy of 1925.
- Beautiful patriotic poetry writing was one of his charms.
- The famous poem ‘Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna’ was penned by Ram Prasad Bismil.
- He was sentenced to execution by the British.
- He was hanged to death on 19 Dec 1927 by the British, at the age of 30 years.

Udham Singh
- Born on 26th December 1899 at Sunam, Udham Singh was a revolutionist.
- He was a major part of the Ghadar Party.
- He is known for the assassination (on 13th March 1940) of the former lieutenant governor of Punjab, Michael O’Dwyer, who was responsible for the Jallian Wala bagh Massacre.
- Udham Singh adopted the Surname Ram Mohammad Singh Azad, that depicts all three major religions of Punjab.
- He was hanged to death by the British on 31st July 1940.
Sachindranath Sanyal
- Sachindranath was born in the year 1893 at Benaras.
- He was the mentor and role model to several revolutionists including Chandra Shekhar Azad and Bhagat Singh.
- Sachindranath Sanyal founded the Hindustan Republican Association (HSA).
- He wrote the famous book “Bandi Jeevan”.
- Sanyal was jailed for life in the cellular jail at Andaman for Kakori Train Dacoity Conspiracy.
- He was one of the masterminds in the Ghadar conspiracy.
- He died on 6th February 1943 after being infected with Tuberculosis.
Ashfaqullah Khan
- Ashfaqullah was born at Shahjahanpur on 22nd October 1900.
- The revolutionary mind in Khan awakened by the formation of Hindustan Republican Association.
- He was majorly involved in the Kakori Train Dacoity Conspiracy.
- Along with Bismil, Rajendra Lahiri and Thakur Roshan Singh, Ashfaqullah Khan was given a death sentence by the British.
- He was hanged to death at Faizabad Jail on 19th December 1927.
Lala Hardayal Mathur
- Born on 14th October 1884 at Delhi, Lala Hardayal Mathur was a nationalist revolutionary leader.
- He turned down his career in civil service to concentrate on the freedom movement.
- Hardayal Mathur formed the Ghadar Party in 1913 in America.
- He had a vast knowledge in various topics and authored many famous books including Our Educational Problem, Bodhisattva Doctrines, Thoughts on Education, etc.
- He died on 4th March 1939 , at the age of 54.
Madan Lal Dhingra
- Madan Lal was born on 18th September 1883 at Amritsar in Punjab.
- He is known for assassinating Sir William Hutt Curzon Wyllie in London on 01 Jul 1909.
- Just a month later, on August 17th 1909, Madan lal Dhingra was hanged to death in London itself.

Surya Sen
- He was born on 22 March 1894 at Chittagong District.
- He actively recruited young revolutionary minded people from Chittagong to participate in the Freedom Movement.
- Surya Sen led the Chittagong armoury raid in 1930.
- Following the Chittagong raid Sen was arrested on 16 February 1933.
- He was hanged to death on 12th January 1934 by the British.
Madame Bhikaji Cama
- Madam Cama was born on 24th September 1861 at Navsari.
- At the International Socialist Conference held in Germany, she unfurled the Indian National Flag for the first time.
- She was known as India’s First Cultural representative to the United States.
- After participating in many revolutionary ideals to free India, she died on 13th August 1936 at Bombay.
Jatin Das
- Jatindra Nath Das commonly known as Jatin Das was born on 27th October 1904.
- He was an active member of Anushilan Samiti, a revolutionary organization based in Bengal.
- He was arrested for his activities and was imprisoned.
- At the prison, he demanded equal treatment to all inmates and went on a 63 day long hunger strike that turned out to be fatal.
- He died on 13th September 1929 as an aftermath of the hunger strike.
- The death of Jatin Das was an eye opener to the people against illegal imprisonment.
Vasudev Balwant Phadke
- Vasudev was born on 4th November 1845 at Shirdhon.
- He is known as the “Father of Indian Armed Rebellion”.
- He formed a revolutionary group by accumulating the Ramoshi people.
- Phadke was the co-founder of Poona Native Institution (PNI), which is now known as Maharashtra Education Society (MES).
- He died of hunger strike on 17th February 1883 after being imprisoned by the British.
Sachindra Bakshi
- Bakshi was born on 25th December 1904 at Varanasi.
- He was one of the founders of the Hindustan Republican Association which later went to be known as Hindustan Socialist Republican Association.
- Following the Kakori Train Robbery Case, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
- He died on 23rd November 1984 at the age of 79 in Uttar Pradesh.

Anant Laxman Kanhere
- He was born on 7 January 1892 at Ratnagiri in India.
- He worked for many secret revolutionary organizations during his stay in Bombay.
- Anant assassinated the then Commissioner of Bombay, Mr Jackson on 21st December 1909.
- He was convicted and hanged to death on 19th April 1909 at Thane prison.
Rani Gaidinliu
- Rani Gaidinliu was born on 26th January 1915 at Manipur.
- She joined the Heraka Movement at the young age of 13 years.
- When the leader of the Heraka Movement, Jadonang , was hanged by the British, Rani Gaidinliu led the organization .
- She actively fought against the British.
- On 17th February 1993. She breathed her last at the age of 78.
Manmath Nath Gupta
- He was born in the year 1908 on 7 February at Varanasi.
- Nath has authored many revolutionary books in Bengali, Hindi and English languages.
- At the age of 13, he became one of the youngest active members of the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA).
- For his role in the Kakori Train incident, he was imprisoned by the British.
- He breathed his last at the age of 92 on 26 October 2000 at his residence in Delhi.
Bagha Jatin
- Jatindranath Mukherjee, commonly known as Bagha Jain was born in Bengal.
- He led the organization named ‘JUGANTAR’ in Bengal.
- Along with Barinde Ghosh, he set up a bomb factory in Deoghar.
- He was involved in the Howrah-Shibpur conspiracy case.
- On 10th September 1915 Jatin died of wounds from an attack with the British.
Krishnaji Gopal Karve
- Gopal Karve was born in 1887 at Nashik.
- He was an active member of Abhinav Bharat Society.
- He was involved in the asssassination of Jackson, the Collector of Nashik.
- The British convicted and hanged him to death on 19th April 1910 at Thane Prison.

Batukeshwar Dutt
- The revolutionary freedom fighter Batukeshwar Dutt was born on 18th November 1910 at Khandaghosh.
- Widely known as B.K Dutt , he was a contemporary of Bhagath Singh.
- He helped Bhagat Singh to throw bombs at the Legislative Assembly.
- He died on 20th July 1965 after a prolonged illness.
Alluri Sitarama Raju
- Alluri was born on 4th July 1897 at Madras.
- In 1922, he led the Rampa rebellion against the British.
- He was shot dead by the British on 07th May 1924, after an attack spree.
Sri Aurobindo Ghosh
- One of the greatest national leaders of his times, Sri Aurobindo Ghosh was born on 15th August 1872 at Bengal.
- He was a spiritual and social leader to the masses.
- He was in the forefront to establish the Anushilan Samiti.
- Even though he was a supporter of non violence in public, Sri Aurobindo had a heart towards the revolutionary freedom movement.
- He died on 5th December 1950 at Pondicherry. He was 78 years old at that time.
Sukhdev Thapar
- A brave revolutionary, Sukhdev Thapar, was born on 15th May 1907 at Ludhiana.
- He was a very active member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association.
- He was convicted along with Bhagat Singh and Rajguru for murdering a British officer, Colonel Saunders.
- The British hanged him to death on 23rd March 1931 at Lahore Prison.
Kushal Konwar
- Kushal Konwar was born in Assam on 21st March 1905.
- He was falsely accused of a train sabotage at Golaghat in which many British officers lost lives.
- On 15th June 1943, he was hanged by the British.
- His conviction remains one of the last cases of hanging by the British after beginning the Quit India Movement.
As we look at the list of the revolutionary freedom fighters of India, we notice a common pattern. Most of the revolutionary fighters were hanged to death by the British. This itself proves, how impactful the revolutionary freedom fighters in paving the road for an independent nation. As we look back at the history of the Indian Freedom Movement, let us take a moment to all the brave heroes who lost their lives for the cause.
