How to Get Railway Jobs in India? Railway Exams and Eligibility Criteria

Indian Railway is the largest employment provider in the world. Be an engineer, doctor, accountant, or any other graduate or not a graduate whatever your education be, Indian Railway has a job offer for you. More than 13 lakh people are employed by the railways, and the number increases every year. Indian Railway staffs are classified into gazetted (Group A and Group B) and non-gazetted (Group C and Group D) employees. The executive / managerial / officer level employees are in the Gazetted classification. This group holds only 1.2% of the total employees while Group C and Group D account for 92.6% and 6.2% respectively. Recruitment for the railway jobs in India occurs mainly through three sections, common recruitment test (RRB, and RRC), UPSC Civil Services examination, and departmental examinations.

How to Get Railway Jobs in India?

Every year Railways recruit thousands of candidates towards its service. A handful of salary and job security attract lakhs of aspirants towards the railway services. Railway Group-A gazetted rank jobs are reserved for the Indian Railway Service (IRS) candidates. These positions are filled through the UPSC Combined Civil Service Examinations.

For the Group-B (Gazetted posts), there is no direct recruitment. Group-B employees are recruited through the departmental promotional exams of Group C employees. The Group-C railway jobs include the Junior Engineers  (JE) and depot material superintendents, Senior Sectional Engineer (SSE), NTPC, Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) and Technician posts etc. These recruitments are conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRB). There are 21 Railway Recruitment Boards in India. They are classified according to geographical positions. The Group-D staffs are recruited through the 16 Railway Recruitment Cells (RRCs).

Ahmedabad, Ajmer, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Bilaspur, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gorakhpur, Guwahati, Jammu and Kashmir, Kolkata, Malda, Mumbai, Muzzafarpur, Patna, Ranchi, Secunderabad, Siliguri, Thiruvananthapuram.

Railway Jobs in India Eligibility Criteria

RRB NTPC

• Education Qualification

• Age Limit: Candidates age shall be between 18 years to 33 Years. Age relaxations according to the government norms are applicable.

Railway Jobs: RRB Group D

• Education Qualification: 12th (+2 Stage) / Any Graduates
• Age Limit: Candidates age shall be between 18 years to 30 Years. Age relaxations according to the government norms are applicable.

Railway Jobs: RRB RRC Level-01

• Education Eligibility: 10th pass (OR) ITI from institutions recognized by NCVT/SCVT (or) equivalent (OR) National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) granted by NCVT.
• Age Limit:  Candidates should be below 33 years. Age relaxations according to the government norms are applicable.

RRB Junior Engineer

• Age Limit: Candidates age should be between 18 years-33 years.  Age relaxation is subjected to central government norms.
• Education Qualification

1.  Junior Engineer & Depot Material Superintendent  – Three-year Diploma / Graduation in any stream of  Engineering.
2.  Junior Engineer (IT) – B.Sc. Computer Science / PGDCA / B.Tech (IT /CS)
3. Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant  – B.Sc., Chemistry and Physics.

Note: Candidates in the final year of their Diploma/ Graduation is not eligible for these posts.

RRB Senior Section Engineer (SSE)

• Education Qualification: 4 years Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical, Electronics, Manufacturing, Mechatronics, Industrial, Machining, Instrumentation & Control, Automobile Engineering, and M.SC Electronics.
• Age Limit: The minimum age limit to apply for the RRB SSE posts is between 20 years-34 years Age relaxation for the candidates will be permitted based on the Central Government Rules.
