IELTS Speaking Test – Overview

Part 1: Introduction and Interview
In this part of the test, the examiner introduces themselves and asks the candidate general questions about their background, interests, and hobbies. The candidate is expected to answer the questions in a conversational manner, providing details and examples where necessary.
Part 2: Individual Long Turn
In this part of the test, the candidate is given a task card with a topic and some prompts. They are given one minute to prepare their response, and then they have to speak on the topic for up to two minutes. The examiner may ask a follow-up question to further develop the candidate’s response.
Part 3: Two-way Discussion
In this part of the test, the examiner and the candidate engage in a discussion related to the topic presented in Part 2. The examiner will ask the candidate to express their opinions and ideas, and will engage in a back-and-forth discussion to explore the topic in depth.
To prepare for the IELTS Speaking test, it is important to practice speaking English regularly and to develop good communication skills. Candidates can improve their speaking proficiency by engaging in conversations with native speakers, watching English language movies or TV shows, listening to English language podcasts or radio, and reading English language newspapers or books.
