    IELTS Reading Section Syllabus 2023

According to the IELTS syllabus 2023, the IELTS Reading section evaluates the test taker’s skill in reading as she/he has to answer questions (multiple-choice, sentence completion, summary writing, matching information, short answers, etc.) after reading text passages. Each passage includes 13-14 questions; overall this section has considered as 40 questions to be answered. A mixture of question styles like reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding the logical argument, recognizing writers’ opinions, attitudes, and intention are used to test a wide range of reading skills. The reading passages and questions are distinct in Academic and General Training IELTS.

     Reading – IELTS Academic

The Academic version of the IELTS contains three long texts where the subject matter ranges from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytical. The texts are real and are taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. These are selected for a non-specialist audience but are suitable for candidates entering university courses or pursuing professional registration abroad.

    Reading – IELTS General Training

According to the IELTS 2022 Syllabus, the General Training version needs candidates to read extracts from books, magazines, newspapers, notices, advertisements, company handbooks, and guidelines. These are materials one is likely to overlook daily in an English-speaking background.

Students will be provided 30 minutes and 10 minutes of transfer time to solve both the section. Tabulated below are the major differences between the IELTS syllabus of the 2 types of Reading sections:

IELTS Syllabus-Academic IELTS Syllabus- General Training

The probable source of the paragraphs are
    newspapers, books, journals, research works,
etc. and aim to examine the English skills of
    working professionals or students.

The three paragraphs are similar in
    structure to the academic section
and can be extracted from the company
    guidelines, advertisements, brochures, etc.

    IELTS Writing Section Syllabus 2023

The IELTS writing section also is different for the two versions (Academic and General Training). In this section, the candidates will be evaluated on their skills to fluently write a general report or a short essay. In each version, the section includes two tasks:

    Writing- IELTS Academic:

The writing element of IELTS Academic contains two tasks. Topics are of general interest and appropriate for candidates planning undergraduate and postgraduate studies abroad or pursuing professional registration.

     Task 1

    Task 2

Candidates would be asked to write an essay in reply to a point of view, argument, or problem. Answers to both tasks must be in a formal and academic style. Arguments should be supported by appropriate examples.

The Speaking element assesses the candidates’ use of spoken English; takes between 11 to 14 minutes to complete. The whole Speaking test performed by the candidate is recorded by the examiner. The Speaking element is provided in such a way that it does not permit candidates to rehearse set responses beforehand.

    Part 1

Introduction followed by an Interview. The examiner will ask gener al questions about oneself and a range of ordinary topics, such as home, family, work, studies, and interests. This part prevails for about four and five minutes.

    Part 2

Its long turn. Candidates will be provided a card that asks them to talk about a particular topic. They will have one minute to ready before speaking for up to two minutes. The examiner will then ask one or two questions on the same topic to finish the second part of the speaking test.

    Part 3

Discussion round. Test takers will be asked further questions related to the topic in Part 2. These questions will provide candidates the chance to discuss more abstract ideas and issues. This part of the test prevails for about four to five minutes.
