On March 14, 1997 people from 20 countries came together in Brazil representing dam-affected people and opponents of destructive dam constructions. Around the globe, dams force millions of natives to leave their houses, submerged farmlands, even villages. While dams are boon for a large scale of people, and for the economy of the country it does affect a thousand others making them migrants in their own land. While some dams help to improve the energy infrastructure and irrigation in the country some other makes the floods more destructive. Small scale farmers, rural workers, fishers, tribals, and traditional communities are losing their livelihood and deserted in an unknown place. The International Day for Action for Rivers was adopted by the participants’ March 1997 meeting in Curitiba, Brazil.
