Tamil Nadu is one of the states in India and it has about 65 million native Tamil speakers as per the 2011 census; moreover, there are more than 10 million Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) from Tamil Nadu living around the world including Europe, the United States, Middle East and Southeast Asia who speak Tamil as their mother tongue. Tamil is the official language of Tamil Nadu and it also has been included in an 8th schedule by the Indian constitution since 2004 as one of the languages having classical status, similar to Sanskrit and Telugu languages.

1) Speak Often
One of the easiest ways to feel comfortable speaking is by doing it as often as possible. You can start by making simple requests such as buying a cup of coffee, asking for directions, or looking for something specific at a store. As your confidence grows, try engaging with strangers who speak only your target language. The more you practice, the better you’ll get! Remember that most people are flattered when you try to speak their language, so there’s no need to be afraid of being judged. Keep a conversation going until one of you runs out of things to say—and then take turns practicing new words and phrases back and forth. For example: If someone asks Where are you from? say I’m from India. Then have them repeat it back. It’s much easier than repeating everything they say!

2) Practice Using New Vocabulary
1: Which of the sentences below is grammatically correct?
Practice makes perfect, right? Well, that’s certainly true for learning a new language. At first, it might seem that you have to learn whole words—focusing on one aspect of speech at a time. But there’s also another way: Make flashcards with every word on one side and what it means on the other side. Then carry them around with you, so when you see something or someone that strikes your fancy—say, a movie title or someone walking down the street—you can flip through your flashcards until you find one whose meaning is similar enough for you to make up a sentence about what you saw. You can then repeat those sentences back until they’re part of your everyday vocabulary.

3) Participate As Much As Possible
Joining as many conversations, even if you don’t know everything about them, can help you learn. And it’s easier than you think: Just keep your eyes and ears open. Listen carefully when others speak to you. Ask questions when appropriate (but avoid asking yes-or-no questions). When other people are talking with each other, try inserting yourself into their conversation by saying something like, I’m curious… what do you guys think about that? or What do I need to know about [some aspect of your industry]? You’ll be surprised at how well people take to your inquiries. In fact, they may even come to expect them from you! Also, pay attention to how people react when they hear things they agree with and disagree with. Do they nod along or shake their heads? Is there a lot of verbal feedback—mumbling uh-huh—or does everyone remain silent? If there are several people in a room who all seem engaged in a discussion but aren’t speaking up much, make sure you’re not accidentally dominating the conversation. This is especially important for introverts; we tend to talk more loudly than necessary because we have trouble hearing ourselves over our own voices! Speaking up for yourself is good, but making sure others get their say is better.

4) Understand What You Are Saying
One of your biggest problems will be knowing what you are saying and being understood by others. You should always have a good grasp of what you are trying to communicate before you speak it. Asking questions and searching for answers is critical when trying to communicate with someone else in a language that is foreign to you. Taking classes can help improve your understanding of how English works, but they won’t help if they are not well taught, so look for a solid tutor or instructor who can help give you structure as well as clarity as to what it is that you are trying to say. A strong command of vocabulary will also go a long way toward helping you express yourself effectively.

5) Read Books And Watch Movies In English
One of the most convenient ways to learn more words and how they’re used is by reading in your target language. We recommend choosing a topic you are interested in or excited about, like science fiction or fashion, so that it will be easier for you to pick up new words and become engrossed by what you’re reading. You can also watch English-language movies on streaming sites like Netflix; just turn on subtitles instead of dubbing so that you can read along while getting accustomed to hearing native speakers speak. Listen and repeat: One way to practice your pronunciation is with something called shadowing. With an app like SoundsGood, record yourself saying something aloud then play it back while repeating after it.

6) Improve Your Grammar Skills At The Same Time
It’s hard enough learning a new language, but why make it harder by having to deal with a completely different writing system? Luckily, learning spoken English in Tamil also comes with some benefits: improving your grammar skills at the same time. If you don’t think your grammar is quite up to scratch yet, then you’ll have no problems picking up on any mistakes that come from trying to speak an entirely new language. Focus on speaking first, and reading the second. At least until you’ve got some solid syntax under your belt. And if you want to get ahead of yourself and start reading anyway, try out Duolingo for getting started!

It’s easier to fit classes into your schedule when you can choose your days and times. Many local colleges offer evening or weekend courses, which makes it easy for working adults to go. Taking classes at home also means you don’t have to spend time or money on gas or buses. You can even take interactive online classes that allow you to listen via computer speakers, watch videos and take quizzes when it’s convenient for you. One-on-one conversation is an ideal environment for learning how different people use their language—and where mistakes are most likely to happen. In addition, speaking is often more difficult than writing because you have less time to think about what you want to say next and must respond quickly in order not to miss a beat. When practicing English with others, make sure they speak slowly so that you can follow along easily; otherwise they may lose patience with you and then neither of you will benefit from speaking together!
