India bifurcated the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories. On August 05, 2021 the Union Home ministry evoked the special status given towards Jammu and Kashmir. To depict the newly formed Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh the Survey of India has redrawn the political map. The new map of India has 28 states and 08 Union Territories.

- Rajasthan is the largest state in India
- Hyderabad will be the joint capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for 10 years after that Amravati (proposed) will be the capital of Andhra Pradesh.
- Panaji is also known as Panjim in English, Ponnji in Konkani, and Pongim in Portuguese

The UTs of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have been carved out of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, in accordance with the Union government’s August 5 decision to revoke the special status of the Kashmir under Article 370 and bifurcate it into two Union Territories. This is the first time that a state is being converted into two Union Territories.
- This bi-annual shift of the capitals in Jammu and Kashmir is known as Darbar move.
- Mr. Girish Chander Murmu IAS is the first Lt Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. Mr.Murmu will be the administrative head of the Kashmir and Jammu provinces
- Former defense secretary R K Mathur was appointed the first Lt Governor of Ladakh.
- Jammu and Kashmir is the largest Union Territory (UT) in the country in terms of area.
- Lakshadweep is India’s smallest Union Territory which is an archipelago that consists of 36 islands.
