KAS vs IAS – Which is Easier?

KAS and IAS are both Administrative Service examinations. The only difference is that KAS is a state administrative post while IAS is a Central Administrative post. KAS examination is conducted by the concerned state Public Service Commission whereas IAS is conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission). IAS is an India examination and any eligible candidate can take the examination while KAS is a state administrative examination hence, only eligible candidates from that particular state can take the examination. KAS vs IAS – Which is Easier?

• As we all know that Both the posts KAS and IAS are prestigious posts in India. Both KAS and IAS are Administrative  service examination But KAS is  conducted by State PSC’s whereas  IAS examination held national  level and is conducted by  Also it’s an unavoidable fact that IAS is one of the toughest examinations in this nation.
• Educational Qualification for both KAS and IAS is same, i.e Candidates must hold a Graduation degree in any discipline from any recognized University.
• Since IAS is an all India examination, topics in IAS will be   focused on the entire country while focus on topics included in KAS will be state level. the general level of difficulty of IAS exam is quite higher than KAS or other state services exam.  The  topics will be State centered i.e, you will need to read about the history, geography, census, economy, culture etc. of that particular state. Whereas, in IAS   examination topics will be will be based on the entire country. Hence, You need to know be aware about the history, geography, census, economy, culture etc. various states
• The language papers in KAS and other state services exam will be much harder. For Civil Services Mains exam, the language paper is only qualifying in nature. However, this is not the case with state services exam like KAS where language paper is compulsory and marks will be counted for purpose of qualifying for the Interview.
• In UPSC IAS examination difficulty factor increases with each stage. The last stage i.e, the Interview stage is the ,most difficult one. Each year lakhs of candidates appear and only few make it.
• UPSC tests not only your knowledge and ability to write but even your personality and ability to deal with situations. It takes a special kind of preparation to overcome the UPSC interview stage.
• Also the UPSC syllabus is much tougher than any other examination. It contains a diverse range of subjects.
• KAS exam is tough to crack compared to other state service exams. But in overall, UPSC IAS exam is tougher to crack than KAS exam. Candidates who have cleared IAS  exam can easily crack state level KAS exams.

KAS and IAS Selection Process

The Selection Process for both KAS and IAS is same. Selection process for both is as shown below-

• Preliminary Examination
• Main Examination
• Interview

IAS Exam Pattern

IAS Preliminary Exam:

It has two papers of objective type and carries a maximum of 400 marks. Paper-II (CSAT) in the IAS exam is of qualifying nature and candidates should score a minimum of 33% in this paper to qualify for the next stage of the IAS exam i.e. the Mains.  Both papers have negative marks for wrong answers marked to the tune of 1/3rd of the total marks assigned to that question.

IAS Main Exam

IAS mains consists of 9 papers out of which two papers are qualifying in nature. The two qualifying papers are:

• Paper I – Candidate’s choice of any Indian Language(One of the Indian language to be selected by the candidate from the languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the constitution) and paper II is English Language Paper. Rest of the  7 merit papers exam pattern is given below-

Positions in Central government of India:
