Double Olympic gold-winning hockey legend Keshav Datt passes away
- Keshav Datt, one of India’s finest hockey players and two-time Olympic gold medallist, has passed away, due to age-related ailments.
- He was 95.
- Datt was the last surviving member of the Indian hockey team that won gold at the 1948 London Olympics and 1952 Helsinki Olympics Games.
- In 2019, Datt became the first non-football sportsperson to be conferred the Mohun Bagan Ratna.
P.S. Sreedharan Pillai was appointed as the Governor of Goa
- The Governor of Goa is a nominal head and representative of the President of India in the state of Goa.
- The Governor is appointed by the President for a term of 5 years. P. S. Sreedharan Pillai became the Governor on 7 July 2021.
- P. S. Sreedharan Pillai (born 1 December 1954) is an Indian politician, attorney, and author, who is currently serving as the 19th Governor of Goa state.
- He had also served as the Governor of Mizoram. In addition, he was previously the Bharatiya Janata Party president of Kerala state multiple times.
Mumbai, Pune to host 2022 Women’s Asian Cup
- Women’s Asian Cup in India will be held in Mumbai and Pune after the Asian Football Confederation dropped Bhubaneswar and Ahmedabad as venues to minimize the traveling time for participants and ensure an “optimum environment” for a bio-secure bubble.
- The Mumbai Football Arena at the Andheri Sports Complex and the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi, Pune have been chosen as the new venues.
- The decision was taken after considering the existing challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and as part of efforts to minimize the traveling time for teams and officials between the venues, whilst ensuring the optimum environment to implement the biomedical bubble for the benefit of all stakeholders.
52nd IFFI to be held in November 2021 in Goa
- The 52nd edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will be held in Goa from 20th -28th November 2021.
- The regulations and poster for the 52nd IFFI were released by Hon’ble Minister of Information and Broadcasting Shri Prakash Javadekar.
- On the occasion of the birth centenary of the maestro of Indian cinema Shri Satyajit Ray, the “Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Cinema” has been instituted from this year to be given at the IFFI every year starting from this year.

- Max Verstappen (Netherlands-Red Bull) has won the 2021 Austrian Grand Prix, held on 04, July 2021.
- This is the fifth win of Verstappen in the 2021 Formula One season.
- Also, with this win, Verstappen leads the 2021 driver’s championship standings with 182 points followed by Hamilton (150).
- Valtteri Bottas (Finland- Mercedes) came second.

- Author Kavitha Rao’s new book titled Lady Doctors: The Untold Stories of India’s First Women in Medicine will be released on July 12, 2021.

Andy Jassy replaces Jeff Bezos to take over as Amazon CEO
- Amazon Inc founder and CEO, Jeff Bezos, has officially stepped down as the chief of the company on July 05, 2021.
- Former AWS executive Andy Jassy has been sworn in as the new CEO of the commerce behemoth.
- Bezos will now serve the role of the Executive Chairman of Amazon.
- Bezos founded Amazon exactly 27 years ago on July 5, 1994.
- Jassy is the founder of Amazon Web Services (AWS), the Cloud arm of Amazon, and served as its CEO from April 2016 until July 2021.
World’s tallest sandcastle built in Denmark
- A sandcastle in Denmark has entered into a new Guinness World Record for being the tallest sandcastle in the world.
- The triangular-shaped sandcastle has been built in the town of Blokhus in Denmark. It stands at a height of 21.16 meters.
- This new structure is 3.5m taller than the previous record held by sandcastle measuring 17.66 m in Germany in 2019.
Indian Railways install India’s first movable freshwater tunnel aquarium at Bengaluru station
- The Indian Railways has launched India’s first movable freshwater tunnel aquarium ‘Aquatic Kingdom’ at the Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna Railway Station, which is also known as Bengaluru City Railway Station.
- The state-of-the-art aquarium has been jointly opened by the Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation Limited (IRSDC) in collaboration with the HNi Aquatic Kingdom.
- The Aquatic Kingdom aquarium is based on the concept of the Amazon River and is 12-feet long.
India’s first maritime arbitration center to be set up in Gandhinagar
- The Gujarat Maritime University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) in GIFT City to set up the Gujarat International Maritime Arbitration Centre (GIMAC).
- GIMAC will be the first of its kind center in India to manage arbitration and mediation proceedings for disputes related to the maritime and shipping sector.
- It will be part of a maritime cluster that is being set up by the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) at GIFT City in Gandhinagar.
