History of the Vijay Diwas 2022

Till 1971, Bangladesh was a part of Pakistan, which was called ‘East Pakistan’. It is believed that people of ‘East Pakistan’ were beaten, exploited, raped and murdered by the Pakistani Army. Several media outlets reported about the genocide by the Pakistan army against the Bengalis and Hindus from this region. On March 25, 1971, the Pakistani Army launched Operation Searchlight. Targets of the operation included rebellious leaders, Hindus, and Bengali senior army officers, etc. The killings led to the deaths of at least 26,000 people, as admitted by Pakistan. Against this various rebellious groups starts protesting. Mukti Bahini was one of such groups.

The Mukti Bahini, also known as the Bangladesh Forces, was the guerrilla resistance movement consisting of the Bangladeshi military, paramilitary and civilians during the War of Liberation that transformed East Pakistan into Bangladesh.

The Indian administration supported the various rebellion groups in Bangladesh against the brutality of Pakistan’s army. The 1971 Indo-Pak war had formally broken out on December 03, when the Pakistani air force had simultaneously attacked several Indian airfields on India’s western front. Pakistan aimed to draw India’s maximum forces on India’s western front, to prevent a military operation in East Pakistan. The 1971 Indo-Pak war was fought under the leadership of Field Marshal Manekshaw. About 1500 soldiers of India were martyred during this war. On 16 December 1971, about 93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered before the Indian Army Commander Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Arora in Dhaka. Bangladesh (East Pakistan) was liberated. Since then, December 16 is celebrated as Vijay Diwas in India and Bangladesh.
