Holi Festival in India: History and Myth
Every spring, people in India and the world celebrate the Hindu festival of Holi, throwing colored water and powder at each other. According to the Hindu mythology of the Bhagavata Purana, which explains the entire history of the Holi festival, Hiranyakashipu was the ruler of the evil asuras who received a boon that gave him five incredible powers. He demanded that everyone worship only him. Prahlada, his son, resisted and devoted himself to Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu was furious and imposed terrible punishments until Holika, Prahlada’s wicked aunt, persuaded him to join her on a funeral pyre. As the fire raged, Holika perished, but Prahlada escaped. Vishnu came at dusk, disemboweled the king, and killed him with his lion claws. It is considered the myth behind the Holi celebration. Also, the day celebrates the eternal and divine love of god Radha Krishna. Holi marks the arrival of summer in India somewhere, the end of winter, and the blossoming of love, and it is a festive day for many to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and restore damaged connections.
