India’s Independence Day is celebrated every year on 15th August, to mark the nation’s independence from British rule in 1947. It’s a national holiday that is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy across the country. People from all walks of life come together to celebrate this joyous day and commemorate India’s hard-won freedom. History of Indian Independence
The rule of the British in India was marked by the victory of the Battle of Plassey of 1757. And, the East India Company gained its rule over the country. And for the next 100 years, the rule of Britishers dominated India. The First War of Independence was started on 10th May 1857. The revolt started in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh and the immediate cause was the introduction of greased cartridges.
In 1858, the Queen’s Proclamation abolished the East India Company. Many other changes were also made in the governing pattern. And the Government of Indian Act 1858 was enacted in the wake of 1857 revolt.
The next phase of the India Independence movement was started after the INC formation in 1885 and later on transformation was bought by Mahatma Gandhi who advocated the method of nonviolence, non-cooperation movement which was also followed by a Civil Disobedience movement. The period after World War I(1914) was marked by British reforms such as the Montagu–Chelmsford Reforms, but it also witnessed the Home rule movement(1916), Champaran Satyagraha(1917- Gandhiji’s first satyagraha), Rowlatt Act(1919) related Jalianwala Bagh Massacre and calls for self-rule by Indian activists.
In, 1929 the Indian National Congress at its Lahore session, declaration of the Purna Swaraj, or “Declaration of the Independence of India” was proclaimed, and in relation to that, 26 January 1930 was declared as Independence Day.
The Government of India Act, 1935 laid the foundation for democracy in India. Then, the call for the Second World War changed world politics. In this scenario, the August offer(1940) was proposed, which was refused by the congress which inturn demanded immediate self-government. The failure of Cripp’s Mission( 1942) led to the Quit India Movement.
Cabinet Mission(1946) proposed the formation of the Union of India. And British government in early 1947 announced to transfer all powers to the Indians by June 1948. Mountbatten Plan, 1947 to divide India was accepted by the All India Congress Committee on 15th June 1947.
The Indian Independence Bill was in the parliament on July 4th,1947. And the Indian Independence Act was enacted on July 18, 1947. On 14-15 August 1947 midnight Indian Independence Act came into force. And, India got independence.

Independence Day in India 2023
Prime Minister of India unfurls the National Flag, the tricolor of saffron, white and green, and holds a speech at the Red Fort. Red Fort in Delhi is an important symbol as on 15 August 1947, the first Prime Minister of Independent India, Jawahar Lal Nehru unveiled India’s flag. Twenty-one gunshots are fired in honor of the overwhelming occasion. The President delivers the “Address to the Nation” on Independence Day eve.
Independence Day celebrations will be a firmly restricted affair this year, both in the national capital and all across the country, due to the coronavirus pandemic. This year, PM Modi has invited the Indian contingent that represented the country at the Tokyo Olympics to Red Fort.
