UPSC Malayalam Paper
There are two optional papers for Malayalam – Paper I and Paper II.
Paper I – It is theoretical in nature. Students should have a deep understanding of the characteristics of the language to do well in this paper.
Paper II – This includes many literary compositions. Students should be able to understand the characters of novels and also critically evaluate the work. Most of the stories and poems in the syllabus would have been covered earlier if you had Malayalam as one of your subjects in school.

UPSC Malayalam Exam Pattern
The Mains exam has a total of 9 papers out of which two are optional which vary from candidate to candidate.
- There will be two papers for Malayalam Literature in UPSC Mains Examination.
- Both the papers of the Malayalam Literature Optional Subject will be of 250 marks each, which totals up to 500 marks.
- All papers including both the Malayalam Literature Optional Subject Papers are subjective.
- There will be no negative marking.
- The duration of the exam will be three hours.

Can a candidate choose Malayalam if he/she has not studied at graduate or Post graduate level?
Yes, you can choose Malayalam even if you have not done it at graduate or post graduate level.
Can I write all the papers in Malayalam?
You are allowed to write UPSC exams in your mother tongue. But the essay paper is in English only.
Is it necessary to have a strong command over English to clear the UPSC Exam?
Not at all! But you must have decent communication skills in English.
