UPSC NDA Selection Process 2020
Around a whopping 4 lakh aspiring candidates appear for NDA every year. It is indeed one of the most sought after entrance examinations of our country. Further, this examination recruit candidate to Army, Navy and Air Force wings of NDA and INAC (Indian Naval Academy Course).

The selection process of UPSC NDA 2020 includes the following stages:
- Written examination
- SSB Interview
Firstly, a written examination is conducted. Next, all the successful candidates are short listed based on their performance. Finally, they must appear for the interview before the Selection Boards of Army, Navy and Air Force.

Written Examination
It is the first stage to recruit candidates for NDA. All the aspiring candidates must surely clear this test in order to become eligible for the next round of selection process.
- The written exam is a 900 marks, 180-minute test.
- It comprises of two sections, namely Mathematics and General Ability Test.
- The commission later decides the minimum qualifying marks to further participate in the selection process.
SSB Interview
It is the ultimate round of the NDA Selection Process. Here, the Services Selection Board (SSB) assesses the candidates for becoming officers in the Indian Armed forces. Moreover, it is an organization which is set-up by the Ministry of Defence, India. However, it consists of a five-day long procedure with two distinct stages. Moreover, the stages comprise of two different tests. They are:
- Psychological Aptitude Test
- Intelligence Test
Each qualifying candidate will be put to stage 1 on the first day of their reporting at the Selection Centres. Further, those candidates who clear stage 1 will be invited for the remaining tests. However, the final selection of the candidate will be based on the marks of both written examination and SSB Interview.
Complete SSB Procedure
Stage I: It is basically a screening test. It consists of Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests, Picture Perception & Description Test. Further, all the successful candidates will be short listed to stage two.
Stage II: It is a 4-Day long process. This stage consists of Psychology Tests, Group Testing Officer Tasks (GTO Tasks), Interview and Conference.

Day 0 (Reporting Day)
All the qualified candidates should certainly report to the selection centre. In addition, they must carry the original documents and photocopies with them. These will be later verified. Furthermore, a Personal Information Questionnaire (PIQ) forms will be given to each candidate.
Day 1 (Screening Test)
Each candidate must appear for two tests, namely Intelligence Test (Verbal and Non-Verbal) and Picture Perception Test.
Intelligence Test
This test consists of both verbal and non-verbal questions. It is a written test with a 30 – seconds time allocated for each question.
Picture Perception Test
The candidates are asked to write a story based on a picture shown for 30 seconds. Further, this test is followed by a group discussion amongst the different candidates. Therefore, this round is often called as Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT).
Day 2 (Psychology Test)
On this day, the psychological suitability of the candidates is put to test. However, it is a set of written tests conducted by a Psychologist. Furthermore, it includes-
- Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
- Word Association Test (WAT)
- Situation Reaction Test (SRT)
- Self – Description Test (SD)
Day 3 & Day 4 (Group Testing Officer Tasks)
The candidates are tested with Interactive activities (both indoor and outdoor) on the day 3 and day 4 of the SSB Interview. Nevertheless, they are a mixture of mental and physical activities. These tests include-
- Group discussion
- Group Planning Exercise
- Progressive Group Tasks
- Half Group Tasks
- Individual Obstacles
- Group Obstacles Race Command task
- Lecturette
- Final Group Task
An Interviewing officer will interview the candidates once the tasks are completed.
Day 5
On this day, all the SSB members and the candidates join for a chat. Soon after the Board meeting, SSB result will be announced. The final merit list will be announced after the medical examination of the qualifying candidates.
