On June 21, 2002, the Minister of Canadian Heritage, Sheila Copps, signed a Ministerial Proclamation to declare that the second Sunday of June would be celebrated annually as Canadian Rivers Day. In British Columbia, Canadians had already been celebrating BC Rivers Day (founded by Mark Angelo) for over two decades and the day is now the largest rivers-related event in North America. This day was such a hit in British Columbia that there is now a World Rivers Day which was announced on June 29, 2005 and is celebrated annually on the last Sunday of September. In 2005, the United Nations launched the “Water for Life Decade” for a greater awareness of the need to take care for our water resources.
With rivers facing threats, active involvement of people is the need of the hour to maintain the health of the rivers. “Rivers are the arteries of our planet; they are lifelines in the truest sense,” said Mark Angelo, internationally celebrated river conservationist and founder of World Rivers Day.
World rivers day highlights the values of our rivers, strives to increase public awareness, and encourages the improved stewardship of all rivers around the world. Rivers in virtually every country face an array of threats, and only through our active involvement can we ensure their health in the years ahead.

The Perennial River
A perennial river, also known as a permanent river, never runs dry and keeps flowing throughout the year. Seasonal variations affect a river’s height and flow rate. However, most frequently, perennial rivers have reliable sources that guarantee their continued flow.
