On the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth organized in 1998 in Lisbon was the first world conference of ministers responsible for Youth. Members from 145 countries attended this meeting. The meeting agenda was to discuss national youth policies of a cross-sectoral nature and focuses on the development of education, employment, health, etc. Participants vowed to enhance youth participation in all areas of society, including government decision and policy-making; to ensure the right to development of all young people; and to strengthen the role of youth and youth organizations in peace-building, conflict prevention and conflict resolutions. National Youth Day 2023 – January 12
Don’t confuse International Youth Day, with the World Youth Day. World Youth Day was founded by Pope John Paul II in 1986 influenced by the Light-Life Movement in Poland. It is an invitation for youth to respond to the call to bring the love of Christ to the world. World Youth Day is celebrated each year on Palm Sunday.

The number of young people is reaching exceptional levels in most developing countries. The United Nations defines youth as persons between the ages of 15 and 24, and they are making one-sixth of the population of the world. The UN states education as a source for these statistics. It is necessary to celebrate and to reward them for their exceptional work towards society. The youth decides the future of any society. If they choose the wrong path, then one day it may lead to the catastrophic end of the world.
In 1985, the United Nations (UN) celebrated the first-ever International Year of Youth based on the Libson conference. Years down the road the United Nations General Assembly adopted the World Programme of Action for Youth (WPAY). WPAY provides a framework of policies and guidelines for member nations to look to in improving the situation of the youth. United Nation’s Resolution 54/120 designated in 1999 as International Youth Day and will be celebrated every year on 12 August. So form 2000 on wards UN organizes the International Youth Day on August 12 annually. The International Youth Day provides an opportunity for all UN member nations to celebrates the voices, actions and initiatives, of youth as well as their significant engagement towards the world’s harmony.

- 1991: The idea was proposed by the young people who were gathered in Vienna, for the first session of the World Youth Forum of the United Nations System.
- 1998: A resolution proclaiming August 12 as International Youth Day was adopted by the first session of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, Lisbon.
- 1999: UN General Assembly endorsed the International Youth Day in its 54/120 resolution “Policies and programmes involving youth”.
- 2000: Started the celebration of International Youth Day on August 12
