National Doctor’s Day in India is celebrated on July 1 every year to commemorate Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a legendary physician, philanthropist, educationist, and social worker, who also served as Chief Minister of West Bengal for 14 years.

History and Significance of Doctor’s Day

July 1, is often celebrated as National Doctors day in India in honor of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, who was not only a physician himself but a philanthropist, educationist, and social worker, who also served as Chief Minister of West Bengal for 14 years.
Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy MRCP, FRCS
He was born on 1st July 1882 and died on the same date, i.e., 1st July 1962. Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy was multi-talented as he was a physician, educationist, philanthropist, freedom fighter, and statesman. He has served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1948 until his death in 1962. Moreover, he is listed among the few people in history to have obtained F.R.C.S. and M.R.C.P. degrees simultaneously.
Bidhan Roy is considered to be the Maker of Modern West Bengal as he has played a key role in the founding of several institutions and five eminent cities, such as Durgapur, Kalyani, Bidhannagar, Ashokenagar, and Habra. He was honored with India’s highest civilian award – Bharat Ratna – on 4th February 1961.
Bidhan Chandra Roy has made many contributions to the organization of medical education. It is nevertheless to be addressed and honored. He has an important role in the establishment of the Jadavpur T.B. Hospital, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, Victoria Institution (college), and Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital. Of these, the Chittaranjan Seva Sadan for women and children was opened in 1926.
Recognitions and Memorial Awards
- In memory Bidhan Roy, the B.C. Roy National Award was instituted in 1962 and has been awarded annually since 1976. The award recognizes excellent contributions in the areas of medicine, politics, science, philosophy, literature, and arts.
- The Dr. B.C. Roy Memorial Library and Reading Room for Children in the Children’s Book Trust, New Delhi, was opened in 1967.
- The private papers of Mr. Roy are part of the Archives at the Nehru Memorial Museum & Library, at Teen Murti House, Delhi.
