India’s internship landscape has changed more in the last two years than in the previous decade. The NEP 2020 mandate for practical learning, the GenAI boom reshaping what engineers are expected to know from day one, and record-breaking government infrastructure spending have together created the most active internship season in recent memory.
Internshala alone now hosts over 7,700 active listings at any point – a 135% increase since 2020. AICTE’s internship portal crossed one lakh verified opportunities in 2026.
The challenge for engineering freshers is no longer finding internships – it’s finding the right ones, applying before the window closes, and standing out in a pool that grows more competitive every cycle.

What’s Driving the 2026 Internship Surge?
NEP 2020 mandates practical learning
The National Education Policy 2020 has made internships a credit-bearing requirement across most engineering programmes. AICTE-affiliated colleges are now required to ensure students complete at least one industry internship before graduation – translating directly into demand for more structured opportunities.
GenAI boom creates new engineering roles
The post-2024 generative AI expansion has permanently changed what freshers are expected to know. Companies now post internships in RAG pipelines, LLM fine-tuning, and agentic AI that simply didn’t exist three years ago — and they’re paying ₹15,000 to ₹35,000 per month for students who can demonstrate relevant projects.
India’s infrastructure push fuels core demand
With ₹11.11 lakh crore in government capital expenditure, projects spanning metro rail, national highways, smart cities, and ports are simultaneously active across the country. This creates an unusually large appetite for civil, structural, and mechanical engineering interns.
Stipends have climbed sharply
Average internship stipends on Internshala have risen significantly as startups compete for talent and top companies raise compensation to reflect market rates. In 2026, ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 per month is now the mid-range for engineering roles – a bar that was considered high just two years ago.

Summer (active now)
May – July 2026
- Private companies
- NHAI (applications closed)
- Startups on Internshala
The highest-volume period. Startups on Internshala and private companies fill the majority of on-site roles now. Most listings in this article are open during this window. Apply immediately as quotas close without warning.
Monsoon / Rolling
July – September 2026
- TULIP (year-round)
- DRDO labs (rolling)
- AICTE portal listings
Less competitive than summer for government roles because fewer students are actively searching.
Autumn / Pre-campus
Sep – November 2026
- Campus drives begin
- TCS NQT window
- L&T on-campus visits
If you haven’t secured an internship yet, this window shifts toward pre-placement activity.
Winter / Research
December 2026 – Feb 2027
- Infosys Winternship
- IIT research programmes
- Ministry internships
Infosys Winternship opens. IIT research internship programmes (SRFP) begin accepting applications. Excellent for those targeting public sector or research careers.
Eligibility: Quick Reference
Eligibility requirements vary significantly across private, start-up, and government roles. Here’s what each category typically expects.
Private companies (Anarock, Subinfra):
Any year of relevant engineering programme. Active enrolment usually sufficient; no backlog restrictions in most listings. CGPA requirement varies — some ask for 6.0+, others don’t specify.
Startups (Kalbhorz, Hypertangent, MPower, Abvolt):
Most open to pre-final and final year students. Soft requirements focus on skills and projects rather than academic performance. Demonstrated interest (even through hobby projects) is weighted heavily.
TULIP (MoHUA/AICTE):
Indian citizen. Results declared within the past 36 months. Open to diploma, graduate, and postgraduate students from any AICTE-affiliated or non-AICTE institution. Apply via internship.aicte-india.org only.
DRDO DLRL Hyderabad:
Final year B.E./B.Tech students entering their 4th year in 2026–27. No active backlogs. Minimum 15 working days per month attendance required to receive stipend. Selection is merit-based on CGPA. Application is offline — sent by post.

Know MoreFrequently Asked Questions
I am in my 2nd year. Can I apply for engineering internships?
Yes, for most Internshala and AICTE portal listings. Government internships like NHAI and DRDO typically prefer 3rd/final-year students or those in their last two semesters. TULIP is open to all years from recognised institutions.
How do I count an internship academic credits under NEP 2020?
Most AICTE-portal and government internships (NHAI, TULIP, DRDO) issue certificates recognised under NEP 2020 for credit transfer. Private company internships are accepted if the company issues a completion certificate on official letterhead. Confirm with your university’s academic office before starting.
Are remote internships as valuable as on-site ones?
It depends on the role. For software, AI, and data roles, remote internships are fully accepted and increasingly preferred by employers. For construction, mechanical workshops, or site-based civil roles, on-site presence is non-negotiable — the learning is physical.
As NHAI’s deadline has passed, what’s the next government construction internships?
TULIP runs year-round — check internship.aicte-india.org regularly. DRDO labs post on a rolling basis at drdo.gov.in. CPWD accepts direct email applications to zonal offices at any time. The next NHAI cycle typically opens again in March 2027.
